What would you use if...

Question for all our Surf Gurus... if you're going to target large rays from shore, what surf rod/blank would you use? Please recommend something under $300 IF POSSIBLE Thanks!!

Hi Stickbomi!,

For fishing only? In that case, the 13ft Penn Long Range (6ft Butt, 7ft Tip) suffices very well, and fits well within your budget. The Long Range (multiplier type) can be found at Fishing Buddy, Siow Chang Ubi & Arab Street. Also saw one at Joe's some time back.

If you do not want a factory built rod, you can always choose from the range of Penn Blanks that owner of Siow Chang (Ubi) brought in upon my request about 4 months ago. The blanks ranges from Penn Power Graph bass (11'6 ft) to full pendulum PPT.

When people mentioned UK Surf Rods, the fact is that they might be developed in UK, engineered in UK, but manufactured elsewhere or outsourced. Hope you get my drift.

Spot on Melvin but i think Mikey or myself will prefer a 3 pcs rod since we don't drive.

Birdnest, the rod Melvin mentioned retails slightly above SGD 200.

The Horizon Special aka banana rod will be out soon. You may want to consider even though it above your budget. This rod have no problem handling big mama rays from shore but a little too long for jetty use.

Can also double up as your popping rod...hahahaha.

I've use PPT Pundulum factory built before and even got it strip down by one of the caster... Let me tell you after stripping and re-ring it

it felt much better and delightful to cast with, but my only concern is with its weight.

I think its too heavy for our asian built.... Don't get me wrong i'm not writing a review here.

Personally I think, Penn make quite an affordable and reliable blanks


By the way bro Melvin are those blanks the new generation blanks eg.. PPT Sidewinder to PPT Sidewinder Evo which is slimmer and lighter

You are right with the point that the PPT series onwards is too heavy for asian built. Personnally, Long Range 13ft M is the furthest I would go. Sold my PPT Sidewinder after it was with me for barely 6 months. Anyway, I am more of a surf angler instead of a caster.

As for the PPT blanks, they are of the Sidewinder, Groundcast and Pendulum range. However, they are made to specs from second or third production run onwards and hence, slightly lighter that the first production run. I still have a Penn Powergraph, Groundcast & Long Range from the first production run, and I feel that the blank factory (some of you would know of this factory, very near to SG lah!) did a great job for that one production. Rods from later production runs did not have recovery action (when a fish is on) like the first batch. I made this statement as I have the rods from later production runs too.
