Took a few hours off work and went fishing at my usual spot today. Bought some wat-wat and a small pack of fresh squid from Gary's shop in Changi Village and started off using squid since I didn't have any cooler box with me. I set up two rods and rigged one with a long leader and another with a apollo. Things got off to a good start with small sharks landed on both rods. Was using small pieces of squid initially and started using whole squid (2") on the long leader set up to see if the "big bait big fish" theory worked. After casting out the two baits, I started fiddling with my stuff when suddenly my outfit with the whole squid started screaming! Something was taking off with my bait and the rod almost doubled over. After a brief 5 minute fight, a 5kg+ stingray was flapping on the water surface and successfully landed the help of a passerby (the nice chap actually climbed over the concrete rails and pulled the ray up for me). Not long after that, I had another strong take but the hook pulled out. Suspected it was another ray and it could have been bigger than the first because it was really heavy and took line aggressively when it felt the hook. Other than the ray and the big take, I was lucky enough to have landed several different species of catfish, eel, shark and even foul hooked a sea snake!
This was certainly a good day for me and the 5kg+ ray is my personal best after fishing at my fav spot regularly for more than 2yrs. Keeping my fingers crossed and hope to catch something over 10kgs one day![]()
