That's a GT rod used for surfcasting. Similar rod which are more powerful are the conoflex makoi designed to be used with 80-100lb mono straight through on a 6/0 multi.
Huge bells are attached near the butt for bite detection.
Will definitely pull a stingray!
Sweet. That with a Newell 332 or 338 would be an awesome backcasting rod off the beach for sharks.

Just found out that the rod weighs a whopping 1085 grams or 38.61 ouncesIt may be a really strong rod but it may take an even stronger angler to cast that beast!
A few years ago there was a pic of a woman casting a similar spec rod with a multi! The old blue marlim are as heavy due to the high level of glass in the rod. I guess the thallus is heavy because of the heavy hilo recoil guides, the reelseat and the gimbal.
A 300g is not easy to cast even with a light rod, it takes a lot of practice. There are rod like the daiwa power africg which is rated to 400g design for surf in africa, same as the sert sunset.
What I would like to try is the defi muthos, I'm sure it can be use with a pendulum, a popping rod for surf.
ahhhh... pendulum with a Zenaq?! better not tell the company you bought it from that you snapped the rod whilst trying the pendulum... when you send it back for warranty claim hahahahaha!!

Lol.
If your technique is smooth you will be fine. I've tried several times on a 9 ft med heavy tica rod and have snapped only one when I've put power on the turn. Not as costly as a zenap, lol.
I've tried a few times on my 80p as wel with 65g poppers and the handle is a tad short on those rod to bring that tip down without bending the arm.
lol... if your rods could speak... they'll be shouting for help
On a separate note, JT/Evan have you guys ever fish one of those old school Team Daiwa-S Surf sticks? I'm eying the 12' 20-40lb model and should be pairing it to a TSS4 that I just "inherited by force" hahahaha!!! Its supposed to handle up to 6oz weights but I'll be using 125g sinker at most with a streamlined long leader rig.

I like all the Team Daiwa line of rods. The Surf Sticks and the Whisper rods are terrific. They'll do fine for long casting with streamlined rigs.
I'd take that Tallus for casting big fish heads and heavy sputnik weights for sharks. You can move a big rod with heavy gear using a pendulum backcast. We hit 8-10oz plus big baits hard on the drum rods we use over here. With these setups, a good caster can put bait out over 100 yards.

Thanks Evan!![]()
This is a rod that's pretty similar to the Tallus Uluashould be an ideal rod for monster rays off the beach!!!
