    Spratly Fishing 4th - 12th July 2009

3 of us, mainly Botak, Fatt and me went on KK David's boat to spratly Islands from 4th -12th July 2009. We had a initial of 5 kakis, but eventually only 3 could make it. The preparation for the trip was time consuming, but really thanks to Benji from A.O who really help us in term of logistic, rigging, ideals as well as packing our gears. This trip was mainly bottom fishing for Tunz and shark.

The catch was not so ideal due to the fact that we were grounded at one of the reef for 2 days waiting for the Naval personnal to clear us, but they were busy trying to locate a Viet trawler around the surrounding waters. The weather was also not favourable as the really strong winds made parking quite impossible. 2m - 3m waves was making travelling to other reefs quite a tedious affair.

Most important is that the boat crew and Anglers work to accomodate each other request and that the crew on board are willing to work hard to locate fish for the anglers........

Despite all the unfavourable conditions we were facing and fish was not biting at all, i feel that they could also be affected by the moon phase............

on the 2nd day, the 3 of us was so tired in the morning at 9am cos we fish through the nite that we decided to do a last drop at 180m when a dogtooth decided to grab the 3-4kg yellow-fin bait on the way down at 150m. The DT was landed by all 3 of us because it was on Botak's set-up, Ah Fatts rig and bait up and fought by me...... Talk about team work !!! The DT was eventually cut up as shark/Tunz bait but due to the unfavourable current, only small shark and the usual Escolas entertained us which was released.

But i really think in all fishing trips, the Kakis really plays a important part to making it a success whether or not there is fish to catch. I am glad i have such Kakis with me on this trip which made this trip basically a laugh non stop trip !!!!

yeah....... all our spool are badly corroded big time. but no choice to prevent the barra from visiting us. so, be prepared to sacrificed your CXs when u load wire main line. We were kinda of prepare for it. Your rod must be full roller too, if not the wire will cut through your normal SIC guides. But i guess, if you use nylon coated wire, the damage will not be so bad.

Depends on whats size of electric reel you using.

    for braid - CX9 200lbs abt 800m

    for wire - at least 0.6mm 600-700m

thanks for the info, thought cx might be able to solve the anodizing prob, looks like i'll have to sacrifice another reel again after my tiagra50 falls into the same fate as your reels.

If you are thinking on just using your X4hp for the monster there, u might probably need a back up reel. Its good for fish in the 20kg-30kg range, no problem at all .......... anything >50kg might be too siong for the X4hp. My X4 got trashed, its on the way to jepun.....

We have tiagra 80WA spooled with wire main lines too...... the 50s might be a bit small due to the diameter of the wire main line. you need to have at least 500m of line on your reel comfortablely.

i had spooled 1000yds of 50lb (0.5mm) wire line into my tiagra 50 during my last spratly so should not be any problem spooling 500m of 80lb wire for my next trip.
