Since current at Rompin is usually quite slack, when using big live prawn, HongKong hooks(hook size 2/0 - 4/0) are also effective with its instantaneous feel during any take.

Had followed Phillip (a SG oldbird HK hook user who should be in his early 60s now) to islands off Mersing, Malaysia (P. Rawa, Besar etc.) in the late 80s & early 90s. Phillip is the elder brother of Peter(skipper for Dog1 for Poh Tackle specializing in shallow reef fishing at Southern Islands). It's amazing how Phillip can recognised fishing spots off Mersing islands with mere land marking & also used HK hook with #12-15 dupont handline landing parrot >3Kg. During those trips, we transport our own 2 X 12V battery, colour echo sounder with transducer, 12V air pump, customed made ice box(for transporting 4Kg of live prawn from Tian Guan to Mersing) & self fabricated DC 12V squid light. Phillip is certainly one of those highly regarded senior anglers if not for his temperamental/demanding character. Somewhat a senior legendary gift of the gap & am wondering someone may had ever been his disciple

Tail portion of the live prawn is pinched off before baiting onto HK hook. Was told this helps to prevent line twist (handline is tied directly onto HK hook without any terminal tackle in between)

Wishing both you & Mike a great trip in Rompin.

    Hi YS,

I also know of an uncle Philip who has equipment customed for these trips up to Mersing. Brings along 12V batteries, echo sounder, gps, custom prawn tubs, the works basically. This chap actually directs the Mersing boatmen to the spots. And yes, he is in his 60s and is a very accomplished hong kong hook handliner. By any chance does this chap have a taxi license? I met him when I was in a taxi one day.

    Regards,

    Hi YS,

Do you remember Gimson? Gimson still fishes with Philip. He was telling me they got some big kims and coral trouts on one of their trips late last year. Gimson was actually thinking of organizing a cost-sharing trip and bringing Ah Bee along Ah Bee was actually keen Ha Ha can't imagine what would have happened

Mike, sorry being sort of OT & hijacking your thread.

    Mark,

Yeah, the same uncle Philip I'm referring to. Yes, he's a taxi driver. Directs any Mersing boatman to his spots including how to anchor the boat. For trips with uncle Philip, I'd witnessed fishes >3Kg for species like red snappers, chermin, coral trout, parrots, ang cho using HK hooks with #12-20 dupont handline .

Should the 2 legendaries meet during a fishing trip & both are great drinkers(uncle Philip has a real big barrel under his belly )

When able to sing the same tune

    Opposing tune, hahaha

Spectators would probably needs ear plugs + ear defenders instead of mere plugs to stay within safe audio noise level of 140dB

Nevertheless, both deserve due respect from any anglers from angling perspectives.
