On The Right Day, Time & Place Too

These were caught in about two hours or so of soaking baits yesterday. Lost three more biggies with one straightening the hook!!! The ungah should easily pull the scales to 4kg & the larger grouper probably about 7kg.

    KK ,

With your experiences , how could you under estimate the strength of the fish by using hook not worthy of them ? Well , better be well prepared next time . Were u using braided line ?

Sad to say, this is the first time a Mutu Light has opened up on me on a fish. Have used the same size hook to land fishes up to 15-20kg without any problems. I figured it was either a "bad" hook, or the hook hit a bone & did not go all the way through resulting in the straightening when the fish made it's dash. Was only using 30# Jerry Brown spectra with a 20 foot or so of 50# mono wind-on shock leader. Was totally surprised when the hook came back straight!!! Oh well, as they say "shit happens!"

    KK ,

Should not happen like that with any MUTU , may be a particular out of specs. hook which happened to be the one you used . Yes , things like that happen in life but there is always the next time ! Good luck .

    Mak,

Hehehehehe... you and YS are really giving the big bottom fish a workout...

As for the MTC Light opening up, on 30lb braid I do find that pretty suprising, but I guess the possibilities have been outlined pretty well by you and John. Better check the batch you were using just in case it was a dodgy batch.

And speaking of tackle failure, I had a chat with a friend last Friday who told me that he encountered what he thought must have been the MAMA grouper, 'cos he said that he had been busted off twice by something huge with slow tail strokes... 1st time, 80lb leader, Busted.... 2nd time 100lb leader Busted, 3rd time 150lb leader, full drag on the Tyrnos 30 with thumbs on the spool, fish started coming up and then just seemed to casually head back down and BUSTED..... Sampo Bearing on Ranggong exploded this time..... so I guess it is Mama Grouper season....

Great catch dude.... I think my remark in YS's CR was precognisant, 'cos I posted it b4 I saw your CR .

Long Live Bait and Bottom Bashing.

    Regards,

    Saimee

    Hi Siamee

Basically Mr Mak can't hook and land fish if YS & me don't rig and nurse him thru, never had those type of problems when he is on my boat but hanging around naughty ladies will do him in for sure. Hahahaha

Where do you get so big grouper over there. I saw a couple real big ones on youtube that someone kindly pointed out and i think those are above 300 pds. Largest that i landed was about 150 to 180 pds not to talk about those that was lost on 35+pd drag. It bend a Calstar 50-130 into U and mess up an 665 side plate when a heavy duty dude tried to crank(???) when the rod was bounding. I kinda (quickly) step away from that. When the leader went it was quite impressive. I'm setting up a ATD 30 with 80pd braid and maybe a Baja boomer or cut down unlimted class trolling blank for that kinda work.

    Tight lines Siamee

    Ragman dude,

Naughty Ladies????.... Hehehehehehe.... well, I dunno which he would prefer, the tender ministrations of you or YS or the AHEM!!!, "Tender" ministrations of some naughty ladies....

I broke my favorite 24kg stroker on a fish like that sometime back....

As for those huge grouper on youtube, I think I know the vid... its in the Florida keys right?.... The water is pretty shallow there, where my friend was fishing it was about 200ft deep. We have been blown away on occasion by the same suspects i.e. very slow powerful deliberate tail sweeps, almost no violent headshakes.

As for "U" bending a 50-130 Calstar....oooooooooo!!!! NICE.... I hope the anglers face was not in line with the rod when the leader popped...hehehehhehehe.... Mind you, my biggest Ungah managed to bend my GF755H into a "U" whilst the rod was in the holder....

Good luck with the broomstick, I certainly am not one to say anything against bottom canons I reckon if not an ATD30, then a new AVET 30 or 50 Narrow would do the job nicely. Instead of 80lb braid, if the water is shallow, you might want to try 100lb mono....

    Guys ,

Better get a chair + harness if you want to use heavy trollling outfit , as Saimee pointed out if the line/leader/terminal tackles happened to break when putting huge pressure , the rod + guide will surely hit the angler's face !
