Hi guys,
Long term follower on this site and this is my first time post.
This is an overdue report from an awesome trip I had a few months back, it was fantastic week away sportfishing Ono island, Fiji with Ocean Blue Fishing. The angler’s lodge at Ono is a quality sport fisherman’s ecolodge. When angler groups book it, the resort is entirely and just for them, so its exclusive in that sense. We enjoyed superb food and great facilities, right down to having a massuese available to help with aching muscles!
The fishing turned on quality and quantity! On poppers we caught GT’s, yellowfin tuna, red bass, maori wrasse, bluefin trevally and longnose emperor to name a few. Plenty of highlights, including coming across a school of yellowfin on our boat transfer from the Kadavu airport to the resort! I quickly rigged up and was hooked up to a feisty YFT within 30mins of stepping off the plane. What a welcome!
The next morning Kerry got a 25kg GT on one of his first casts of the trip! We also enjoyed a triple hookup on GT’s in the shallows, with all fish landed. Mark wasn’t as lucky only half an hour later when a big GT hit his popper and powered back over the shallow reef break and into the lagoon.
On jigs we caught dogtooth tuna, red bass, XOS GT, pukapuka (red snapper), mangrove jack and more. The jigging we experienced was as good as the popping. Each session had it standout event!! I got a nice doggie around 30kg, it hit a 200gram Black Magic jig and took off like a freight train. Eventually it turned and came in under the duress of a Stella 20000 and Smith Nirai, and a lot of sweating and pain from me.. We lost other unstoppable doggies, with Mark getting a jig bent in half as a trophy. Got some great puka puka also, a lovely powerful fish on jigs. Mark scored a 50kg GT on a 400g jig and Jigging Master 350 rod.
Here are some pics Kerry took which show the type of trip we had..
Cheers Dave![]()
