Maldives Catch Report 2nd April 2007

    Hi FOs,
Am back in the Maldives again, this time abit longer. The first thing I did when I had the time to do some fishing was to do some popping from the shore at dawn, not so good, had a Bluefin trevally & a GT.Will try some more....

On the 2nd of april, had an opportunity to go fishing with the local fishing Dhoni.Set off at first light to catch baitfish(fusiliers),it is very interesting & educating to see how these baitfish where caught,my first time. The Dhoni will circle around the Thilas (underwater structures) to look for the fusiliers, after locating ,a diver will free dive down 10m using minced fishmeat to attract the fusiliers, once they congragate into a big ball, they drop the net down, continuing to bait them with minced fishmeat, with the help six men,3 in the water & 3 on top, they start to haul up the net, inside the net hundreds of fusiliers get tossed into the live well. The colours of the fusiliers are amazing,beautiful........too pretty to use as live bait...but to the Maldivians,it's the best live bait fish...being practiced for generations.....

After having hauled up several nets of fusiliers,we head out towards the Indian Ocean to fish for Rainbow Runners. The baitman will toss baitfish into the ocean, and you can see a frenzy going on,without wasting time everyone release their line with the live bait ,Lok Chiak,Lok Chiak.......feeling....my forearms were so sore from reeling in the Runners, using my 765xl with MXL 2spd.should have brought a spinner, much easier......... We stop catching until we reached 60 nos. of Runners. That was the order for Runners for the day.

After the frenzy,we had lunch, all cooked on board with a make shift stove. After having our bellies filled,we started bottom fishing for reef fishes, tough luck, current wasn't good,so nothing much happening.....everyone just relax & lepak under the blazing sun.....

The captain decided to deliver the Rainbow Runners to the resort since we were not catching anything.
It was already evening by then,we head out again for bottom fishing. It was slow in the beginning, just as the reddish glow starts to fade into the horizon, the momentum picked up......again the Lok Chiak ,Lok Chiak feeling......adrenaline rush.......We were hauling up Emperor snappers,Red bass,Job fish,Bluefin trevally & barracudas (all average sizes range from 5kg-9kgs)....like crazy.....never had my 765xl & MXL worked so hard......phew.......total reef fishes caught around 50nos..

We had to stop because no more bait fish.......sigh......
The trip ended after delivering the reef fishes to the resort. In all ,it was fun, educating, interesting & above all "Best fishing ". Man. to be able to fish with the local Maldivian Dhoni. Thank God.....
That's all folks....hope you all don't mind my long Catch Report, first time writing such a long Catch Report........ Pics to be continued.......

    Rgds.

    Hi R,

That is a nice report! I never know we could get Emperor Snapper in Maldives

How is the taste of the grouper? I tried once when i was there and the meat was very tough and has a coconut alike taste/smell.

    Cheers,

    Dear R,

Similar to what i experience over in Landaa. Rainbow runner is the most common fishes and occasionally, those fisherman hit very big GT or dogtooth tuna. Are those fisherman using very light mono line (30lbs) and re-tying their hooks after several fishes? Most of the time, the baits will be used up by 6pm. Since you got the contacts of the fisherman there already, hope to join u in future.

    Any trolling trips?

    Happy fishing

    Ron,

Ohh it is Long Nose Emperor Snapper, I thought it was the Emperor Snapper.
As for the coconut taste, it is not the coconut they used but the grouper have the coconut taste even without coconut :P

Re: Maldives Catch Report 2nd April 2007

That'sa very nice report, pemburu ikan!

I had similar experience eating the groupers there, the bigger ones tasted like crab - yes, spelt ending with a "b".

Out of curiosity, we sashimi-ed a longnose emperor there. It was FANTASTIC! Even better than red bass, to our surprise!

Even though I have not caught a seriously big dogtooth there, but i am very certain that there are really big ones around. & I read from several articles that they simply love rainbow runners. Maybe next time if you guys were to catch so many of them, you could use some as whole livebait on a heavier rig. It would be interesting to see the results.

    Cheers!

    Hi Sui Generis,
    Thank you.
Sure will try out the Runners......who knows.....
I agree with you about the big Doggies....during some of dives I have seen huge Doggies schooling out there, they normally hang around midwater around the Thilas(underwater structures).....
    Hopefully,someday..........
