I decided not to do my ultra long CR this time, simply b'cos I'm knackered and mainly b'cos I want to reserve whats left of my brain cells for the CR on Mikeys trip over next week.
For the moment, all I will say is that the spots we recced were definitely firing on all cyliders at dawn. This time round, the rubies did not make an appearance like the last time, but the AJs and Kerisi Bali certainly kept us entertained.
All spots were over 80km offshore, the weather made for fishable seas, but heading out we did have some spinal rearrangement therapy and coming back in, Ishak laid the smackdown on the throttles and we hit 72kmh in the smoother patches, but we did get a few airborne spells too.
Highlights for me were;
My new toys i.e. my 6500EXP and the PE8 Wrex were a dream to use, first drop on the outfit, 12kg AJ.... I got 4 AJs altogether, 2 on jig and 2 on bait... was a ball of fun.
All together a dozen AJs in 3 hours, 10 big ones over 10kg and a mama one at 20kg. A heap of Kerisi Bali, and Durian Snapper.... Edy was it you that likes durian snapper?.... If so, I will send some fillets back with Mikey, 'cos I kept 3 fish for the freezer.
Dodgy bits;
The Scissors fish are out!!!!!!!!!!. I have a personal theory that the fish on the dropoff have contracted some Scissors fish to clear the dropoff of braided lines..... Ishak lost 3 ranggongs, but miraculously we recovered his 3rd ranggong with a 5 kg kerisi bali still attached to it..... I retrieved my line to find that everything was being held together by only 2 or 3 strands of braid at a bite area 5m above my apollo rig.
Mikey, bring a spare spool of braid, 'cos the only line that survived unscathed was the 80lb Fireline being used by Kashah. I lost over 10m of line.
Finally, I guess the trip was summed up by the feeling of quiet satisfaction and the smile I must have had on my face as we pulled anchor to head home with full coldboxes.
As I looked out over the sea to watch the flying fish scattering at the approach of our boat and the lone huge albatross that hovered as if by magic over the boat the whole morning, I guess I thought to myself that having to cancel trips four times because of weather changes wasn't so bad after all, as long as we had sessions like yesterday mornings wide open bite at the end of the wait.
Things look good Mikey, bring it on bro.
Saimee
