4am I get up, it’s about 8deg C and raining (winter in Sydney)
4.30am Taxi comes and drives the 26 km to the Airport
Get on plane just after 6am and travel 3,300 km’s to Perth (opposite side of Australia to me.)
I look out through the airport windows in Perth and its still raining.
Get on the next plane and travel 1,700km’s further north to Broome.
After disembarking I find its 32deg C (its winter in Broome)
I overnight at Pete’s house. His wife is Japanese and an excellent cook. So we have local Seafood Japanese style, washed down with Aussie Beer and White wine.
Get up at 5am organise all food and items to take up to camp as we wait for the van to pick up us.
5.30 van arrives, 5min to load the van and we’re off to pick up the 4 clients.
Drive 200kms further north to Derby, and then load the floatplane for our final leg.
Once up in the air the view is fantastic and the clients are in awe.
Another 200kms and we arrive.
It’s a long journey from my home and do you think it’s worth it …………………….
YOU BET.
Now I’m not long back from my guiding stint up to remote North West corner of Australia called the Kimberley’s.
Again this year Peter asked if my wife and daughter would like to come up for a free holiday with his wife and 3 kids to do a bit of a camp sitting as there was a 10 day break between guests. Unfortunately work commitments for my wife stopped her and our daughter joining us at camp. Bugger.
Its always great to see the guests appreciate how remote and unchanged this part of the country is with their looks on there faces.
The first group did not like trolling, would not use baits and 10kg baitcasters is all that they would use, so no really big fish, but Barra up to 88cm with some great lure sessions on Fingermark, smallish Gt’s and Queenfish up to 4kg, plus a few Tuna up to 10kg.
One great session Popper fishing for Mangrove jacks, one quote for this session was “If one fish missed the popper the other 10 would attack it” I think 33 species for the week.
The rest of the groups consisted of anglers ranging from good to once a year fisherman. No great fish caught but Doug who has never fished in this part of the country caught his first Barra on the first afternoon and was a very happy man. Lots of fish on bait plus a few great lure sessions. On a trip out to “Trevally Alley” one fellow was using a popper and had Trevally of about 3-4kg on each set of trebles when a very large shark smashed the 2 fish right at the boat taking both trevally and the popper in a shower of water. Great visual
Unfortunately when the fish were fast and furious there was no time to take pics, I still managed a few
Hope you enjoy.
Mud flats around Derby
Boats tied up to fish the Hole
On a load tide we could fish this hole in the reef where all sorts of fish would be trapped. Made great sight fishing.
John with a nice Mangrove Jack out of this sink hole
Pete and Stewy with a couple of Golden Trevally out of this hole.
