    Hello Sportfisherman

Nice catch those YFTs. I'm curious to know why you cast poppers for em' YFTs. I've not had a chance to fish for tunas but always thought live bait, trolling or jigging were the more common methods of fishing for these tunas. :P

    Cheers!

    Rascal ,

We find the tunas nowaday have develop the engine noise shy attitude and trolling aren't as effective while jigging can only work when you are above a structure . Popping into school of feeding tunas have proven to be very effective nowaday , certainly one gets the lure in the midst of the tuna be they are in front , at the sides or behind the boat position . :P

When we sighted the school of feeding tuna , we raced the boat toward it and once near the school , we will position the boat on the side of the school so 2 to 3 anglers can cast into the school , multiple hook up is usually the norm here .

You should try it and Pelabuhan Ratu in the south coast of West Java ,
some 3 hrs drive from Jakarta is the place which has enough good boat to cater for such activities .

Certainly more and more anglers switching from trolling to popping these tunas , nowaday .

Sounds very interesting, will definitely include Pelabuhan Ratu when planning our next fishing trip. When we decide, I would need your help on boat charters in the area. Thanks for sharing the info, I've certainly learned something new.

    Rascal ,

It's best to check with those who go to P. Ratu , tuna is seasonal .

    Hi Sportfisherman

How ignorant of me, I had assumed tuna is around your waters all year round. When is tuna season? You've mentioned that P.Ratu is in the south coast of west Java, would I be correct to say fishing's in the Indian Ocean?

    Hi,

YFTs in some areas are generally known to be boat shy unless they are in a real feeding frenzy have been teased to the boat by chum / berley. In Mauritius for example, the boat I fished with troll for them with huge Rapala lure & it is set waaaaaaay behind the boat.

    Best regards,
    Makaira
