Overall, a new experience fishing off the waters of Sabah as I normally do my offshore fishing around SCS or TP..

Looks like you are fishing on board david's boat. Based on the photos, your group is fishing in the shallow waters (60 - 80m). I was also fishing on board his boat in mid June. Planning to fish there again in oct 09 if my schedule permits.

Yes, we were on David's boat. Most of the photos were taken while we were nearering shore and as such the islands behind...Most of the time when we fished, there were no islands around us....
We did fished at 60-80m, 100-120m and 160-180m.
Thing is some of the guys were using spinners and they were complaining when we fished at the deeper depths, reeling in the sinkers that is.
How was your trip in mid June?

Ok, similar to my trip. 1st night shallow water, 2nd day till 3rd day deep water (180m), last night shallow water again for tengirri and coral fishes. We met strong current in the deep water spot and it was flowing towards the front of the boat. So very lousy catch.

However, i have 2 very strong take (mid water around 100 to 110m depth) in the night at the deep water spot. 150m of 80lbs strip out my reel (hyper tanacom 600) at almost full drag within 2 minutes. Lost both fishes.

Are you organising another trip there end of this year?

Hi Mack,

Regret to hear you being strip of despite using the Hyper Tanacom 600.
I did not have any strong takes for this whole trip, those fishses which striked my baits were all brought up. No problem with my setup of TN40 and Calstar 40-100, averaging 2kg fishes.

Yes, I may organise a trip end of this year should my work schedule permits.
This trip that I went was organised by others, I was just another kaki.
Are you organising any trip out there?

Hi,

Have a frd who may organize trips there in sept and Oct. But the boat is going out from Kudat so the trip will be 3d2n only. He will be targeting the deep 180m spots for the ruby fish and yellow banana fish.

I am interested to go in Oct but looking at 4d3n. Not sure if i will join him but if u are organising kindly let me know, can try to form a group. A good date to look into is Oct 15 to 18. You can take advantage of the cheap air fare given by some airline during promo.

Pardone me but what fish is "yellow banana fish"?
I am planning to do my trip in Dec, was told the fishing will be great.
But year end is monsoon season, so a bit septical, will see do.
Let me know if you have any trip there, will see if my work schedule allows.

Hi,

I have attached the pic of the deepwater banana fish (as mentioned by the locals in sabah). Deckie cooked it in my april trip and it taste good.


If u are going in dec, then u will be fishing in Kudat area. U have to take bus (2hrs) to kudat and board the boat from there. Very risky weather.

I am wondering if they have built a property jetty to board the fishing boat?

The last time i went there, we have to walk a wooden plank to board the fishing board and that is quite a daunting task ... at least for me
