Best Regards,

Hi Fran..long time no hear from you..nice pics!
How's things?
Regards
Ben
Hi benz, everything is fine for me. Good fishing ground in Rodrigues Island except for the wave and winds. Good place for fishing doggie, mama coral trout and very good fishing kakis in this group. It is advisable to stay on land as the inn is reasonable price which include breakfast and dinner. Biggest doggie landed after one day weighing by calibrated scale is 60+ kg. If you need more information, we can meet up for coffee in BR.

Hi fellas,
Just got back from Rodrigues with Team Salty Dogs
Think i'll start the ball rolling with my report and let the other team members chip in later. Pics will come in a day or two, our team leader is collating the lot into a CD. We've got some really kick ass video footage as well but this will take more time to edit![]()
Firstly, many thanks to ChrisT for doing all the liaising and logistics to make this trip possible. And to the rest of the guys, I had an awesome time jigging and popping with all of you![]()
We had planned to jig for 5 days and pop for 2 days (pop trip with half the team on another charter) but the trip started off on a bad note with an international flight delay of 12 hours
Boarded the boat right away once we reached Rodrigues, had lost 1/2 a day fishing already. Jet lag fatigue (to make things worse, we slept at the airport the night before) and moderately rough seasmade fishing uncomfortable on the first 2 days for most team members
Quite a few chaps were really KO
Also, due to a very sad incident, another 1/2 day fishing and a second overnight trip, this time to the Eastern Banks was cancelled. Nothing to do with bad weather/sea state, the boat we jigged from is excellent for the rough sea conditions around Rodrigues.
We jigged at some fantastic spots and trolled from spot to spot. I'm convinced that the seas around Rodrigues hold many trophy Dogtooth Tuna and if someone wants to catch a big doggie badly, Rodrigues would be one of the best places to go about their mission. The Rodrigues doggies respond to jigs pretty well too.
Here's a breakdown of the catch, think overall we landed about 60 to 70 fish, I would say that the overall catch was very good but sadly not many team members got their monster doggies
Dogtooth tuna on jig biggest 66kg weighed 2 days later, skipper put actual weight at around 68kg
Dogtooth tuna on jig around 20-24kg about 4 fish
Dogtooth tuna on jig less than 20kg numerous maybe 20 fish?
White tip shark 90kg x 1 on jig
Wahoo biggest 20kg or so maybe 5 (1 on jig rest on troll)
Sailfish x 2 biggest around 40kg (troll)
Coral trout numerous, some huge fish maybe 3 around 15kg or bigger all on jig
Red bass on jig x 1 say 7kg
Amberjack on jig x 2 say 8kg
Yellowfin tuna several good fish near 20kg all on troll, 6 fish perhaps
Bluefin trevally x 1 on jig 5kg
Barracuda x 1 on jig 15kg
Dorados several 10kg size all on troll
Some smaller sharks
GT all on popper 24kg x 1, 18kg x 2, 2 fish less than 10kg and burst off one at 30kg...big ones landed on second day of popping, wish I had gone but I was down one Carpenter 78EXH due to a mishap
And many many many burst offs on big doggies unfortunately !!!!!

MarkR, on which boat were you on?
Francchia, nice pic of trou d'argent
Hi MarkR,
Nice write up! Also I have learnt that you are the champion whom landed the mama doggie?
JackTrevally,
I believe they were on "BlackMarlin" and the following is the website http://www.rodfishingclub.com/en/accueil.php
Congratulations to ChrisT, MarkR and francchia
Cheers,
Edy
Hi Edy,
The fight time recorded on video is 17 min but we need to add maybe 5 min or so to that so total fight time was about 22 to 25 min.
Tackle used:
Rod Jigging Master 500g Special 2005
Reel Jigger 4000P
Line Whiplash 80lb
Leader 10m of 180lb Seaguar FC
4/0 NT swivel, Decoy split ring and 7/0 Shout Assist Hook
For connections, my standard jigging set-up is a 65 turn bimini finished with a 15 turn Rizzuto, the bimini is connected to the leader with an improved version of the Fisherman knot. Leader is connected to swivel via a 4 turn reverse trilene knot. I prefer a double leader loop around the swivel eye.
As for the jig I'll leave you guessing for the moment![]()
Will try to get a picture up soon...maybe you can see the jig in the picture![]()

Mark was damn good during this trip, he was jigging at the front of the boat during the first pass when he hit his 66+ kg doggie. I show the picture of the doggie only.

Thanks Francis,
Must get photos from ChrisT urgently! I can't wait no more tooYann has some nice shots in his CD but it's in a locked powerpoint format
can't cut and paste. Not solid or anything like that but must admit that I've been pretty lucky on my last few jig trips
Mikey,
Tried the Sanme but no hits unfortunately, nice action but might be better for AJs. Didn't bring the stickbom!, way too heavy for this place, 220g to 450g jigs were sufficient most of the time. The doggie was caught on my favorite jigThis jig has caught me my biggest AJ and Ruby as well
Thanks DFM! I must get hold of the pics tonight! SD card is with ChrisT who was compiling the lot for a Miri kaki who flew home today.
