Need help on 2nd AR dogs of Saltiga Expedition

Guys, anyone has the infos how to install the 'A/R Claw Spring' key no: #77, part no: G33-6601 ?
This Claw Spring actually is a thin wire for engaging the rachet to perform the Anti Reverse movement (if I'm correct)...

I made mistake when I assembled it back after reel maintenance. The Claw Spring didn't place properly in the correct position. So, when I turned the reel, it made a messy sound because of the Claw Spring. At the end of the day, I found out that the Claw Spring was badly deformed !

So now, I can't figure out what the right original shape of the 'Claw Spring' is... and how to install it too.

Dude,

There is a picture of the spring in the schematics dude, it should give you an idea of how it works. I have not taken apart my own 6500 yet, but it looks like one of the ends of the spring goes into the teensy hole on the AR dog (Pt 64). You also have to be sure that your AR cogs(Pt 56) are oriented correctly on the pinion gear shaft (Pt 58. If you get the cogs the wrong way around, that could cause the reel to jam.

Scroll down the page to Image 4 and you will see the AR dog assembly. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to show the spring, but it does give a short description of the AR mechanism and the spring location (on the main gear shaft). It might help you get a better idea.

If all else fails, take it down to a friendly tackle shop like AO and beg/plead for help.

Once I had the idea how it works, I'm sure to put the things back together. It's a bit difficult but done it already.

Glad it worked out for you and that the link helped.

Personally, I think simple is good.... the simpler it is the less likely it is to break.

This part of the AR system is the secondary backup system. The main system is of course the big one way roller clutch bearing on the pinion gear shaft. In the end, I don't think this reel was supposed to be serviced by the owner.... its a pretty high end reel that most owners might prefer to send to the shop.

Of course for "curious" owners like you and I, its something that we can't leave well enough alone. So far, my 6500 has not been used enough or abused enough to warrant me opening her up...

By the way, did you reuse the waterproof seals or did you put in new ones?. I understand that it may be preferable to use new seals each time you do a major service on the reel, but old seals in good condition can in most cases be reused.

Ha3..., I couldn't agree more. I opened all my reels, that's including my stellas as well.

As for the seal, it was in good condition and I re-used it again. Yup, you blow the whistle for the potential problem here...
If the seal spoiled, I can have a problem to find the replacement. Any idea for the material to substitute the seal ?

Actually thats the other reason I did not open mine up yet. A friend of mine has done that once and busted the main seal for the body.... He's a good mechanic and still could not find a suitable substitute even amongst the tons of car spare parts at his disposal. In the end he had to wait until I managed to get a spare set of seals for him.... in fact I gave him the set of seals I was going to keep for my own servicing needs.

Looks like I will have to try and get another set just in case. The seals are rubber molded into the shape of the reel body's case edge, so technically, if you could find a big enough o-ring/gasket that was of similar thickness, I guess you could try and use that as a substitute....but no guarantees.

Out of curiosity, what did you use to relube the gears and bearings?. Did you find any sign of wear to the gears or evidence of water intrusion or corrosion?.

As for the grease, I use Cal's grease for all the gears. The bearing is the 'close' type one (protected with the shield) and I think it's still in good condition. So, I don't need to open the shield to relube it, do I ?
And as far as I noticed, there's no sign of wear & tear or salt water deposit, yet. It's still in perfect condition...

That is great news dude.... I have heard that the Saltiga spinning reels are really well sealed and if there is no sign of salt or water, that means that the seals do indeed work.

I have found that sealed bearings rarely need to be serviced if they have not been exposed to contaminants like water. If they feel smooth, then I reckon you should reuse them. If they feel rougher, I just replace them. I rarely open the seals to oil the bearings unless I know that the bearings are very new or are only a little rough or to really pack grease into some corrosion prone bearings.

Did you check the line roller bearings?.... I have replaced a few sets of these bearings before, along with their seals. Given that they are exposed to so much saltwater off your line, its not surprising that they wear out and get corroded.
