Other than the body colour, line cap and the fancy knob, I don't think there are any mechanical or design difference.
When I needed a popping reel way back when, the 6000 / 6500GT or what have you were not available in Singapore yet. So I simply bought the 5000, which I was assured is EXACTLY the same as the 6000. The GT variant has a higher speed. Then the GT spool became available, I simply bought one & use it when popping. I liked the colour of the EXP and so wanted to get one when it was launched. Luckily, the kind tackle shop told me not to waste money as along the way, I already bought a 6000.
Anyways, who knows, I may have been living under the illusion that they are the same. I am sure the maestro Stickbom will be able to enlighten us with more information.
Wahahaha... dun call me that lar... for someone who owns a fleet of Saltiga reels you're definitely the right person to answer questions about the Saltiga![]()
Jason I believe Mak is right. The Exp & DF runs on the same drivetrain as earlier 6000 and 6000GT reels. Most of the difference between these reels are purely cosmetic. I'm using a Blast myself and ever since carbontex came into the picture, I've no complains about Saltiga reels anymore. Wonderful reels!
Sorry if I'm a bit out of topic. But since everyone keep asking me if I already changed my Exp. with carbontex, can I buy carbontex for my Exp. in Singapore ?
Yo Lod
U can order the carbontex from SMOoOTH DRAG *** Can Stop Anything ***...
They can send to your home .....
Cheers
Jason
Thanks Mak and stickbom
I have question answered....Now is deciding which reel to go well with my new rod....hahahahaha
Cheers
Jason
woah! what new rod? Quick share the joy!![]()
Thanks for the link Jason.
Base from the link, is the carbontex better perform (for Saltiga Exp.) with or without the Cal's grease/drag grease ? And if it's better with Cal's grease, where's in Singapore I can find it ?
cheers,
Lod.
Hi Lod,
I was advised by Erskine to use a tiny dab of Cal's grease on the Carbontex. I believe Dafrogman uses it "wet". Angler Outfitters should carry Cal's grease.
As for whether it performs better wet or dry, DFM will be in a better position to answer that question. I have not installed the Carbontex as yet ......... come to think of it .... I wonder where the hell I put them ....... damn!!!
Best regards,
Makaira

Hi Lod ,
I put grease on them , I use Shimano drag grease and so far no problem when I use it in my Stella 16000F , infact ALL the 6 spools of 10000PG and 16000F of Stella '98 of mine are with carbontex already , one of the spool has carbontex since 2004 when Jack Erskine sent me a set to try them , at the time I used it dry and had a few line breaks but after putting grease
on the washers , everything went smoothly from then on .
Jon .
Lod, I have not tried Cal's Peanut Butter before but the Shimano/Fisherman drag grease works great with Carbontex (not to mention a whole lot of other drag materials). I don't smear grease onto the drag washers itself but rather a very thin layer on the metal washers did the trick for me.
Hi, appreciate if anyone can confirm there are some mechanical changes to the dogfight compare to the Zs and EXP, besides the main gear. First, there are no more holes on the shaft linking the body to the reel seat. I also heard there are some strengthening to other parts that are reportedly prone to breaking. Pardon my ignorance if I get the facts wrong.
How
Jason,
Basically, I use the Cals Peanut Butter![]()

. My usual SOP is ala Alan Tani, i.e. to coat the Carbontex washer in grease (both sides) and then wipe it off till it looks dry. If I find that the drags still need a little smoother action, I will then try putting 3-4 fingerprints of grease on the metal drag washers and that usually does the trick. I have found that you get silly amounts of drag off the EXP even with greased drags.
