Alutecnos 12 Gorilla

Was listed on the CCM webbie for quite a while but has finally made it's debut on the manufacturers website. Looks like an interesting jigging reel. Twin drag design? 40 pounds max drag?

Looks like the gorilla utilizes a one way bearing for anti-reverse. No AR dogs. Interestingly, it appears that all single and even 2-speed Alutecnos game reels have just a single one way anti-reverse bearing too

There is a conspiracy here.... first the Progear OceaNUTS, now the Alutecnos Primate.....

Just when I thought it was safe to stop buying reels.....

But if the Progear has an AR bearing and dog system.... that would get my thumbs up especially if it only costs under S$400....

This Gorilla is some reel! Like Saimee, the Pro Gear gets my vote if it have twin AR dogs and an AR bearing. But if the Oceanus has twin drags as well and is priced within S$450, it will be must have.

I've got an alutecnos albacore 12 (the regular non-gorilla). The anodising sucks. I hope they have fixed that.

So I guess in terms of AR systems, the Jigger 4K & 5K still rock the best. Mind you the OceaNUTS is still a competitive option to the similarly sized AVETs.

Hmmm.... still tempted though.

Agree with you on that one dude. The new magnum pocket rocket overheads that have been introduced lately (Penn Torque, OceaNUTS & Gorilla) look good but still feel the Jigger rocks the best with it's AR systems, drag and awesome power handle.

Hey Lads,
I Have just now caught up with this site and a number of things catch my eye.
First,
the Alutecnos gorilla has been heavily on my mind these past weeks, but I see "Fish_Fingers" has an earlier version which fails the quality test. Did you ever hit Alutecnos about this problem. When one pays ca. $600-00 for a reel this sort of problem should NOT be an issue???
Second,
Stickbom posts pictures of a "tifa Dogtooth Magnum " Rod.
To my eyes the first runner appears to be facing the wrong way?? Or is this how you do it in your part of the world.?
Third,
Would you be so kind as to inform me what "pro gear" reels are.

Welcome to Fishing Outing.... The Progear reels are (or were) US made reels that have quite a following in the States and were pretty good value for money reels giving you all machined metal bodies running basically Penn Star drag type internals.

They came out with a lever drag jig specific reel called the Oceanus (Unfortunate I know)...... The OceaNUTS was supposed to have been developed in cooperation with the AG crew from Taiwan who are as crazy a bunch of jiggers as they come.

I have not had a chance to actually handle the Alutecnos Gorilla and have got something else thats more in line with my deep water bottom bashing preferences... and it complements my Jigger 4000P too .

Well TF dude....

I started out running a Kaikon 4000 and a Kilwell Live Fibre 15-24kg rod but the rod didn't have enough firepower for make or break fishing on the wrecks, sooooo..... I kinda shifted to an Accurate 665HXM Boss Magnum on a Kilwell Live Fibre Blue 24kg Stroker, and after about 2 years, I broke the Kilwell stroker on what was probably a very large grouper.... So I started using custom Calstar standup blanks to build my bottom canons and now I find myself holding a Jigger 4000P with a GF410 and my latest toy... a Trini 40 with one of my GF755Hs.... I am also looking at a Penn Torque 300, maybe another TN40 and probably another GF755H with some tweaking in its configuration... or maybe a cut down GF760L?/.... not sure mate.

For jigging, I have some pretty run of the mill stuff, since I don't really jig that much these days unless I have some of my boys who want to jig.... There is a vid of our jigging shenanigans somewhere on this site along with a couple of cathc reports...

Nothing major on the blank, no cutting. Just a slight revision on the guide and reel seat placement from my previous 755Hs, Sic ocean guides, little stuff. If you are building a GF410, I would not recommend the trigger reel seats with the front facing reel clamp ring unless you can make the foregrip at least 12 inches long....

Sic ocean guides ? hmm. my guides are mostly heavy duty fuji sic guides. maybe can start a thread on type of guides to use for custom made rods ??? for novice like me...it will be extremely usefully

Dude,

I really would not rate you as a novice. As for guide choice on a rod of this type, its best to discuss your requirements with your rod builder. If you are building the rod yourself, then I have rods that use the heavy duty guides too and they are just fine. I like the look of the Ocean Guides, which is why I will give them a go...

There are a lot more guys here who know a lot more about rod building then me dude... I have yet to build my own...

given these day with the technology of the braid lines, I sometime wonders, how much of impact can those guides really handles before line actually cuts into it.

says 80lbs mainline on heavy duty guides. on the average ?

I do not think that braid is capable of cutting into Fuji Sic guides. I did a little experiment once....I took a metal triangular file and tried to cut a groove into the Sic surface on an old guide.... The METAL file did not make a dent in it dude... I doubt if spectra could either.

The only time I have damaged an Sic guide was by impact, i.e. I actually accidently smashed the guide which caused a hairline crack to occur in the Sic insert. That was with the older guides that Fuji had maybe 6 years ago, since then, I have never had any issues with the Sic insert.
