Introduction

Hi,
New in the forum, Oringinally from Singapore but presently based in Bolowolon, Flores, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia . Had to stop fishing for about a year now. Life's ironies, my job revolves round the fishing industry here and just outside my office window is a whole expanse of beautiful looking water which i have not had the time to go and explore. I guess the Almighty is getting his/her own back at me for all the times in Singapore where i"ve skivved and gone fishing instead!

The main fishing area here stretches from south Sulawesi(about 18 hrs - 20hrs away) all the way down the Flores sea, east to Pulau Alor island group near Timor. Including mouthwatering names like Taka Besi, Taka Layar, Bone etc

All sorts of fishing available, big game like marlin and sailfin common, dog tooth, wahoo, yellowfin (Huge! Largest i've have personally seen handlined on a small prahu craft 123Kgs) Big Eye in the 50 - 90 kg range). Tengirri seasonal but can get very large - 27 kilo

Bottom fishing is good as well. Large red coral trout (Tung Sing) up to 15kg. Abundant red coral trout,7 star, red tiger, Green eye, Kertang (40 kg), job fish red and green, queens snapper etc not much red snapper or goldies though. Please note all these are from observations landed by own boats and strictly hand lined only, no nets!

For the popping, jigging crowd, medium GTs etc about 8 to 20 kilo average and other trevally types as well. Almost no freshwater fishing as it is one of the driest places in Indonesia.

Unfortunately i dont have pictures at hand, but will post some in due course when i get the chance. Problem is that internet access in Flores is very limited ( 36.6 bit rate and that too not digital). In fact im sending this from head office in Bali. Please execuse if there are long absences as i may be out at sea or praying to get an internet connection!

New Year resolution to go and get some of the fish im talking about!!

Seasons Greetings to one and all!

Re: Introduction

Giantt,

Wow sounds like a fishing paradise!!! ... why not try to fish during lunch time or weekend? You know fisherman does not need to sleep at all ...

When i was in Israel, I would go fishing around 4am and report to work by 9am

Regards,
Edy

Re: Introduction

Dear Ed/all,

Unfortunately working hours not fixed. We run an ice plant for the fishing fleet here as well as manage some boats of our own for export produce. So you never know when u are on, especially during peak season when it can get hectic. Off season the weather gets bad and strangely it gets really cold here. It went down to 11 degrees this year! Cold wind!!! Big fish generally go off the bite. Cold season begins end July to end August. Bad weather starts end Jan to Mid March (Sea going ferries get cancelled). Have tried some shore based fishing but that's never been my kind of fishing.

Suppose i will have to go out with the boats on the pretext of ensuring that work is complied with! Anyways i hope i have successfully attached some pictures to this message. One shows the view from my office, another is of a 15 kilo Tung Sing or Berlian as it is called here. Last pic should be one of a freshly caught yellow fin tun approx about 78 kilos. Enjoy!
