A group of friends from the shop headed up to Taiwan's disputed islands aka Diao Yu Tai over the labor day weekend for a short 48hr jigging trip.
We were met with fairly rough seas and several members in the group succumbed to sea sickness so the planned 48hr trip was cut short by 12 hrs. Hence, we opted not to fish at the last spot although the Captain told us this spot could produce some large Amberjacks.
The day started slow but we had a nice frenzy in the evening with numerous small Amberjacks landed at a newly found secret spot
The Captain I was told is one of the best and most experienced for jigging the disputed islands. He was extremely hard working and kept moving from spot to spot even during the night.
Overall I think we landed close to 90 small Amberjacks which we sold for a nice price to a restaurant owner! Not bad for 12 hrs of fishing time!
I was most impressed with a new prototype jig that Ken our Taiwanese pro angler friend was testing. "Hot" from the factory and collected only a day earlier, this jig dubbed the "Ocean Treasure" accounted for most of the Amberjacks Ken and myself landed. Some say that Taiwan is not a good place to test jigs because the AJs will inhale any fast sinking jig but the situation on this trip was very different. The "Ocean Treasure" outfished all other jigs hands down!
Many thanks to Ken and our other Taiwanese friends for arranging a truly memorable trip for us![]()
