| Moderator | A little bit of bottom bumping Just some pics and a quick Catch Report from last thursday when the crew and I headed out during the calm period. We recced and found a new spot that at night yielded a bunch of Mangrove Jacks and one Golden Snapper, a Red Emperor etc etc. The fish were definitely there and I suspect that if the current had been a little but stronger, the catch would have been even better. The suprise catch for the night was a chunky Amberjack that went around 15kg, it was a suprise because the water was shallower than usual for finding Amberjacks. The day time saw our usual drift and recce procedure where we found two new spots that were not that productive, but one of them has MJ Territory written all over it.... must go back at night to try that place. Our day time drift saw little action through the morning with just a few 1-2kg kerisi bali and red snapper taken, but the last spot of the day saw a brief flurry of activity with Kerisi Bali and grouper hammering our rigs on every drop. All in all filled our big commercial coldbox. Enjoy the pics. Saimee

The thing that we have found about wild MJs in deep reefs is that they seem to feed most actively almost exclusively at night and that is the time to target them. Golden snapper generally (unless you have live squid) feed best at just before dawn and dusk and if the tides are timed to change during these periods, thats the best time of all. I also had a rather large spotted ray, but we cut it off at boat side due to its size and the fact that the crew said it's flesh was "hard" Hope to go on a run next week to keep my MJ quota running.
