A forgotten feeling....

Well,

Just a quick note on wandering offshore over the weekend for a piscatorial Ramadhan overnight quicky...

As I posted before, the barracouta have been a real problem at the dropoff, but they seemed not to bother mono lines as much. So I emptied the braid from my SST-12 and reloaded with 340m of 24kg Sufix Xcelon mono.

As if on cue, my first decent fish that night got cut off about 10 second into the fight, so I switched to the SST... Man I forgot how much mono stretches especially in 500ft of water, basically zero feeling on nibbles and only waited for the rod to load.... striking meant reeling in like 5 cranks and then yanking the rod up.... The SST auto 2 speed is PERFECT for mono... the high speed lets you crank in the slack and stretch and the low speed engages just in time to grind the fish.

This is what I got.... came in over 17kgs.... also caught a bunch of other fish on the mono... no other pics.... was pretty thirsty at the time

Regards,

Saimee

Good Stuffs there Saimee

I have not tried to use mono as my main line before ... maybe next time when i go to Lucornia or Dogtooth reef, i would give it a try for those pesky barracouta!!!

Cheers,
Edy.

PS. I have clicked wrongly and deleted Makaira's thread on this grouper escapade!!!

Nice Amberjack DFM!

SST's don't seem too popular these days

Used to own an SST8, cranking isn't as good as the Jigger 4000P I bet

Nice catch dude. Your relatives will be treated to Amberjack rendang this coming Hari Raya.

By the way, does the mono line really keep the barracoutas away?

mono shiok I tell you... you won't feel the bite... suddenly your reel just starts screaming and line flies off your reel. hahaha! You can ask Dyran. He saw me jigging with nylon in Bali Something grabbed my jig and made it to the rocky bottom in record time.

Dros,

So far so good, I did get busted off once more, but I suspect that was injury to the line from a tangle... the other advantage is of course that its A LOT cheaper to replace mono... The others on braid got busted off repeatedly whereas Zul on a mono handline didn't have a single problem..

Maybe just lucky, but its a good standby to have...

Edy,

Using mono for mainline = zero sensitivity in deeper waters dude.... keep that in mind.

MarkR,

Yeah, to be honest the SST is one of my lesser used reels due to the weight, but I think with this latest application, it will see a new lease of life on my rod rack....

Glad you guys found that one interesting.

Saime
