Wink Catch Report 7/10/07 - Krisi Bali's Frenzy

For the past 2 to 3 weeks, weather have been real bad with strong winds which made it unsuitable for offshore fishing especially the dropoff. However, after looking at the satellite images on saturday it looks very good and promising, therefore decide to headout early sunday morning.

There were 5 of us on a 28footer fibreglass boat with twin 150hp outboard engines. We met up at 5am, had last minute checkup before making a move. One of the engines was giving us trouble as it wouldnt startup and my partner in crime Captain Boy decide to just troll the boat to the ramp and land it in the water and guess what.. the troubled engine just rev itself up beautifully. By 6am as the sun was rising, we made a move and i enjoy the view of the calm sea. No waves, no swells, beautiful sight and beautiful day to have an outing. My partner in crime push its engine almost to the limits since it was flat and looking at the speed, we were nearly hitting the 80km/hr mark.

Oh,oh... after travelling almost 50km from shore i saw something which almost broke my heart. Big black clouds with the look of heavy rain right ahead of us. We slowed down and i put on my raincoat as we prepared for the worst. Thanks to the experience of my partner in crime, he stop the boat and decide to go for the wind reading and found out that we could move around that rain cloud and continue our journey. And after 15min of avoiding it (we did get a lil shower tho), we continued our journey to the Dropoff.

Arrival at destination: 8am! It was perfect, even saw a couple of speedboats at the same area looking for structure or reefs. After 10 to 15 min of looking around for a good spot with the sounder, we manage to find a very high structure with the depth of 147meters. Looks promising and no underwater current at all, so i drop my line for a try and as it landed below, I felt the nibbles straight away and my partner in crime
ordered the anchor to be drop as he stationed the boat right above the structure.

1st fish to land was a Ruby weighing more then 1kg by a handline angler. As soon as he landed his catch, i felt a strike and start reeling my line in. I know it aint something big but yes, it was another ruby at almost the similar size. Then the sounder became quiet for almost 1hr and the other anglers was grumbling and complaining at the choice of Captain boy and me to pick that spot. But soon they too became quiet, as i keep on reeling in fish after fish. It was like almost 1 drop 1 bite for me as i keep on landing krisi bali's of various sizes. I smile to myself as i knew what their mistake was.. They were probadly using hooks as big as 6/0 to 8/0 's. So i shouted to them: 'Uncle, Hooks too big how to land krisi's? Use 4/0 maximum la! Hahahahah'. So everyone change their hooks and tried to catch up with the number of my catches.

At 11'ish, one of the angler made a mistake by trying to use 2 rods. As he was busy dropping one of the line, the other rod bend over and the reel started screaming. I shouted and pointed it out to him that he should hurry before the fish decide to hide back in the structure. He was a lil too late, the bugger had hid in the structure and all that uncle could do was just pull his line till it broke itself off. However he was lucky enough again as after half hour or so, his rod bend over! This time his rod was in his hands and he was having a good fight. I suspected it to be an Amberjack but to my dismay, it was a 3kg Ruby but with marks on its body being hurt by another fish! I also had a krisi bali as a victim as i reel up to find only its head left on the end of my hook. The bite died down at noon..

One of the angler wanted to move spot but the others seem reluctant as i told them that the fishes will be back shortly and my prediction was right. At 1pm things started to get wild again. Big hookups (but couldnt land any) was there but the problem is the structure was its defense shield. The others was complaining that they keep on losing sinkers due to the fish bringing their line into the structure. I only lost 1 sinker on the whole day itself as the midknot never failed me despite sometimes 'Sangkut', i still manage to bring up back my sinker & hooks. We fish on till 4.30pm and decide to head back at 5pm after refuelling the gas tank. I was asleep on the way back and woke up as we reached the ramp at 6.40pm Total catch between 5 of us was more than 70 krisi bali's,more than 10 rubies and some assorted fishes. I only manage to take pics of my catch and my partner in crime as the other anglers was too tired and decide to head home as they reach the ramp.

Not a bad day and catch for more than 7 hrs of fishing but was dissapointed of not landing any biggies. Well. That wraps up my Catch Report and hope you guys and gals enjoy reading it. Keep the lines tight yea!!!

Hi Akodou,

You guys got almost 100 pcs of fishes.
Divided by 5 anglers and further divide by 7 hours..works out about almost 3 fishes average per hour...i would think it is really good day out fishing...at least for me...

Very detailed Catch Report!

Cheers!

P/S: I landed only got a cobia and a stingray over the weekend at Tanjung Pinang for some 16 hours of fishing. compare to yours?....

th2x: like the saying goes 'Not everyday is sunday'. It all depends on the current, the weather, water temperature and also the spots where you fish. As i said, luck was on our side as usually we had to go to more than just a few spots to get those quantity of catches. But as for my Catch Report, the catch results was all on just one spot alone, this reserves us on fuel economy and time. Me n my partner in crime manage to land nearly 50 fishes while the rest are hooked up by the 1st angler: 16 fish, 2nd angler: 14 and the 3rd had 11. Next time have to change spots cos have to preserve the spot for fishes to breed in time so other anglers can enjoy it as much as we do. However there were 2 other boats nearby our spots at that time and hope that they will not attack the same spot anytime soon or else the fishes will not have time to breed for our next attack.
