Sitiwian, Perak 25-26 Jan 08 Catch Report

Hi all,

This report is requested by a kaki of mine who would like to glimpse Sitiawan expedition.

This trip is basically a purely 2 days jigging trip which is organized by JD. A total of 6 anglers including Mark, Tiong, Robert, John, Thomas and me.

Here i goes.....

Day 1 - 25 Jan

A 10 hours trip from Singapore to Sitiawan, Perak via VIP Coach. A tough and cold travel especially at night. Cold air-con and cool weather. We reached Sitiawan at approx 7am. Checked in Hotel, wash up and went for breakfast. Met up with skipper and chiong for a 2 hours voyage to Sun Vista wreck. For the whole day, only Robert caught a 2 kg garoupa. A goal keeper to be extact using a 210 grams power jig and that's it. No other catches. Since, it was getting dark, we decided to call it a day.

The garoupa was consumed as part of our dinner. The restaurant which the skipper brought us to serve wonderful crusine.

Day 2 - 26 Jan

A 1.5 hours voyage to Pulau Jarak at approx 40 knots. Calm and good weather from main island to Pulau Jarak. Jigged for the whole morning yet no fish are landed. We encountered a big school of dolphines at the other side of the island and spend some time capturing candid shots of them.

Since there are dolphines, there will not be fishes nearby. By that time, we were all pretty half hearted. We went to a famous drop off before we call it a day and try our luck. We sped by a trawler boat and got some fresh squid from them. They are very nice guys and gave us approx 1 kg of squid. Once we reached the drop off, some use jigs while some attached baits to jigs but no fish were in sight. At approx 2pm, Mark hit a 2 kg barracuda. This certainly boost our morals. An hour has passed, yet no one landed any fish not to mention any knocks on our jigs. Upon seeing such situation, we decided to leave at 4pm to prepare for our night ride back to Singapore. Since it is approx 1 hour to 4pm, i decided to work extra hard. It is now or never. I dropped my jig down and continue to work. At approx 0.5 hour to 4pm, i sensed something heavy at the end of my line. At first i thought i had "sung kok" my jig and when i gave it a hard jerk, the line went out fast. A short and fast bust... I took 3 mins to land this fish. A very lucky catch for me and the biggest on jig so far. After since, no other fishes were landed.

We decided to wrap up everything and went back early to wash up and prepare for our ride back home.

Total Anglers: 6 Pax
Total days of Fishing: 2 days
Total fish landed: 3 fishes

It was an unexpected poor trip. The skipper has good spots but we are not sure what happened during that two days. May be the constant presence of trawler boats could contribute to this. Although the fishing is not good but the company makes up everything. Great company guys...

Enjoy the pictures.....

Thank you.

Regards,
CW

nice big & fat kerupa .... can see the trawlers sweeping the areas which may be the caused of your poor catch.

I guess your trip was on slow tide and calm sea. From picture, I could see the water almost like a mirror especially on Jarak picture and next to the thrawler boat. This seriously gave an impact to fish mood. I went to mini drop off last year and we have a good time with 10kg Tenggiri, 10kg Barra and 8 Kerapu size from 3.4kg - 8kg. SunVista produce less nowadays compared to last year. I bet your skipper is Ah Chung? I had 99% believing on him where he knows how to fish, serious jigger and lots of lubuk to bring you guys, but water current could be the one why you had boring trip because the fish is not active. Next trip should be plan during big tide. BTW, nice report and picture. Good size of kerapu. Congrats!!!

Hi Yonkey,

Seems like you had a good trip. Yes. My skipper is Chong. He is crazy jigger who spend so much money in jigging stuffs. Moreover, he is currently building a jigging concept boat. A much bigger and powerful than his Tuna.

Those two days, the current were pretty strong. Even a 250 grams jig can fly. Most likely could be the damage by the thrawler boats.

Thanks a lot.

Regards,
CW

Strikes, yeah he is waiting for his new boat called Tuna II. I hope I will be the 2nd on board on his new boat. 1st should be on board probably those people from Kingfisher or Road&Line crew. This is what he said to me. You should make a come back plan when his new boat ready!

Tight lines..

Hi CW,

Let's plan another trip there...after HB & Rompin

This time i'm gonna be armed to the teeth with Kabura & Inchiku jigs!

Yonkey,

Would you advise choosing a strong current date for Cong's spots?

I think CW's first trip to the drop off was on a slow current date...they had a very good catch with Cong landing a 15kg grouper on jig and many Ang Chos too...I'm curious because most anglers targeting bottom fish with bait would choose to go out on a slightly slower current day...on the other hand, for jigging pelagics, most choose spring tides...this Catch Report was on lunar 18 & 19...very strong currents...I was using up to 280g

Cong had some problems with the depth sounder on this trip, possibly because he was using his friends boat...but can tell he got spots & talent...

Cong's a real speedster too...cruising at 42 knots at one stage!!!!! WAAAAAHHHHH!!!! SHIOK!!!!!

cheers

Hi Mark,

I am sure on for the next expedition. From my last conversation with Chong, his new boat will not be ready in march. Maybe we can try out in April.

CW

Mark, seriously I cant predict when is good to fish there. 2 trip there to Jarak and Pulau Sembilan gave us sad and good catches. From 4 trip I went with Chong, 2 trip was great, 1 trip was so so, and during slow tide I went on the in the middle of January produce zero. So, I predict after spring tide or going to big tide would be the best time. Popping at Jarak island lately giving good result. But dont put so high expection how big GT you could get there. Last december we have GT range from 5-15kg (good enough size to get over there). Another lubuk of GT is Hutan Melintang seamount. I'm not sure if Chong can bring you there or not, but you can ask him. FYI, for the next trip there, I would like to try the SunVista again. See previous report on SunVista here

http://kyfk.blogspot.com/2007/07/sitiawan-wreck-9th-july-2007.html

I'm still tak percaya why this lubuk cant produce good result !!

Cruising at 35-42 knot was good but I dont really comfortable with a bumpy situation . Good luck on your next trip there!

Hi Yonkey,

I understand you are from KL. Chong mentioned that the tackle shops in Kepong (near police station) are much worth visiting rather than Maharajalela because of the high price tag. Do you have the address to these tackle shops? How many are there and what time do they close?

I usually have business visits to KL and i hope to get some tackle stuffs from there.

Thank you very much.

Regards,
CW

Hehe.. Mark, i'm not Ken. Ken have been so quiet nowadays since he came back from Burma Bank. His blog, his write, his fishing trip has brought him as 1 of top jigger here. I do respect him . He's one of Chong's regular customer as I am. But of course, he went to Jarak more than I'am. And more power than me. I'm just beginner lah, 12 jigging trip only so far

Noticed the rather "skinny" Barracuda ... and the buldging eyes of the Grouper! Good catch anyway! Cheers!
