My Mood: Rep Power: 4 ![]() | Sedili-Aur 20-21 Catch Report Pulau Aur (Aur Island) is located 65km east of Mersing on the east coast of Johor. This island and its surrounding islands -- Pulau Dayang (Dayang Island), Pulau Lang (Lang Island) and Pulau Pinang (Pinang Island) are rated by divers as one of the best scuba diving destinations within the Johor Marine Park area. The waters here are deeper than around the inner islands. Due to its remoteness from the mainland, visibility is excellent and sightings of pelagic are common. However, cost of boat rentals are high and scuba diving has been possible only in groups pre-arranged by dive shops in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The Aur group of islands has been designated as a Marine Park. Therefore, visitors are subject to conditions and regulations. Simple words from a fishing maniac – it is a little heaven for anglers. It was close to 8 in the morning when we reached our first spot, ‘The Unjam’ (somewhere close to Aur). Upon reaching we let down our apollo rigs to catch baitfishes. First baitfishes were up. We started to set out our cable rigs using Selars, Angs and Kembongs as baits to target our prime candidate – ‘The Tenggiris’. Sani and Arman decided to do bottom while Fendi & myself did some drifting. Razak, Arman’s father and the deckies were enjoying the moment of harvesting the baitfishes. Some of the bottoms that were caught were groupers, lengs, chiams and kerisis. Sun was up high and soon it was time for lunch. Asam Pedas was served - a malay cuisine compliments from the boatman. As we were enjoying our lunch, suddenly my rod started to scream. In a flurry of rush, (so rushed that I had to wash my hands so as not to tarnish my reel handle with traces of assam pedas! Kena maintain la..) I grabbed the rod and gave a good strike as the line spilled out. All of a sudden the hook was disengaged and I nearly fell back while my rod hit the lamp at the top beam causing it to explode and shattered into pieces. (Some drama there for awhile. Maybe it’s an adrenaline warm up!) While waiting for our baits to be taken, deckie Bakar manage to bring up a decent 3kg tenggiri using the “indon tenggiri rig”. The day went by quite slow but by then we already secured 2 cooler boxes full of baits and bottom fishes. Next, we moved out to a ‘karang’ spot to do some bottom fishing and drifting near Pulau Aur. The currents were found slacked. We used 2 hooks apollo rig. Only manage a handful of bottoms and a 2.5kg barracuda. The boys decided to head for shore and call it a day. Usual routine of cleaning ourselves. Dinner was at the nearby warong. Further into the night, we boarded the boat and headed out. Decided to park in the channel between Aur and Dayang(if I’m not mistaken). The weather eventually turned windy and we saw some boats that left the island earlier returning back to seek shelter as the sea out there was a little too rough. As normal, we did some bottom, jigging and luring. Managed to haul decent size groupers. There were some surface actions in the midst. Sani tried to cast at the spot. As he was retrieving his lure…..WHAM!….His reel started to scream and soon after a short fight between the prey & predator took place. He was rewarded with a nice kila and a half Cupak. After the excitement, we were back to normal quietness yet again. The windy weather won I would say. It managed to lure some of us boys to dreamland. Obviously, the call was too much of a resistance. When we woke up, the boat was already on the move heading to Karang Luas. Upon reaching, boatman suggested me to do drifting method and he rig for me a dead kembong and hurl it into the sea. I let my line out about 40meters and so does Fendi. We waited. All of a sudden my rod screamed…and screamed without stopping! With the speed of a lightning (imagine super hero FLASH!) I grabbed my rod and gave it a good yank. This time I made sure the hook was really set. But atlas, to my disappointment, the line started to slack and damn, I lost it again. Some super hero stunt that was! Reeled in my line like a soldier that has just been defeated. As I was reeling in, there appears to be some resistance. Saw a fish swimming towards the boat and we saw a glimpse of something silvery and long. Made few runs under the boat and as my swivel touches the tip of my rod..HAIL!!! Everyone saw it!!! It was a tenggiri! Quickly the boatman grabbed my leader and gaffed it…..(soldier back on the battle field)..Minutes later…phew!…a nice 7 kg tenggiri was landed. Everyone congratulated me…at last…my very first tenggiri. I felt like a super hero again. Laughs! Everyone was injected with the excitement back again. We rigged up new baits and waited. During this period, there were few takes and burst lines on Fendi, Sani, Razak and Arman’s baits. Then, Fendi signaled to move out to our final spot, ‘The unjams’ and try our luck there before we call it a day. At this very spot, miraculously there were lots of tuna playing on the surface. So, we cast our apollo bait rig and managed to get some small size tunas. Sani popped out his lure and started to cast. His lure was taken. All of us started to cast and were rewarded with lots of 2kilo size tuna. We did have lots of fun. Fun is where the time passed by so fast that it was noon. Boatman prepared lunch and this time it was curry (Burp! excuse me). Obviously the digestive system was overloaded. We had to call it a day. Trip summary: Its not every of our trip that one catches a 7kg tenggiri. So I guess, I’m still feeling the super hero effect (LOL)Pulau Aur (Aur Island) is located 65km east of Mersing on the east coast of Johor.
