Sabah - Kudat revisited (jan 5-9 2006)

Hello mates,

I guess everyone remember about the Sabah trip I had 3 months ago. I ended up hiking at Mount Kinabalu due to rough seas (5 M) and empty ice box.

This time armed with my regular fishing gears plus the newly acquired Ishidai Z40 and Genesis Amberjack Special, I am heading to Sabah (Kudat) for fishing again.

This trip we have 18 people and divided into 2 boats.

1st boat with the famous boatman Sotong and 2nd boat with his brother David. Since I have been on David’s boat before, I requested to the organizer – MR Henry Low to assign me to the Sotong’s boat.

The design of both boats are about the same but the parking skill of Sotong is just amazing and every new spot we went surely yielded some good fish … there was one spot we went … on the first drop, everyone on the boat landed fish and Chris lost 2 of his jigs to the toothy creature too. We suspect it was a big Tengirri.

I have landed Job Fish, Trevally, Long Nose Emperor, Coral Trout, Grouper, Barracuda, Japanese Red and Assorted Coral fish.

The combination of the Ishidai reel plus the Genesis Amberjack Special (PE4-7) is really good … very smooth reel and the rod bend just nice with lifting power. Fighting 6kgs job fish on it is no feat … so smooth and nice :P

The previous rod I have Genesis BX57 (PE 4-7) is a solid broomstick which could break anyone’s back if not handled properly .

Some highlights from the trip:

Yong, our consistent angler, caught quite a lot of fish and he lost 2 big Grouper and broke one of his rod too.

Chris, The only Jigger onboard, jigged assorted Trevallies and Rosy Job Fish.

Alex, Our “Superman” was our part time angler due to sea sickness but nevertheless he landed 1 really good size Red Snapper and assorted Coral Fish.

Mr Wong, Our full time sleeping angler was knocked out the moment he boarded the boat.

Clive, landed two nice size coral trout and assorted Coral Fish.

This trip, we only fish for 1 day and 1 night due to the rough sea and spend 2 nights in Kudat and 1 night in Kota Kinabalu. As usual when we are on land, we ended up drinking too much.

Edy...

Ahhhhh Sabah, the land of serious Mr Longnosed Emperors and those Jobbies boy can they pull especially the 5kg+ specimens... great fun dude and it looks like you guys had a ball....

Shame you only had 1D 1N, imagine a 5 day liveaboard trip.... did you guys get any MJs at night?. I reckon Kudat waters should have been infested and no Mr Kerisi Bali dude?.... a bit suprised, but maybe you were fishing pretty inshore due to the weather considerations....

Anyway, great catches, hmmmm, maybe I should wander down that way, its only about 8 hours drive, just for a change of scenery... the weather still sucks at the moment with 50-60kmh winds and 3.5m seas... hope for a break this weekend for the inaugral 2006 trip...

BTW, got hold of some new waaaayyyyy out coordinates (over 100km) to be explored later this year during the swimming pool seas which we hope to see in April (after stocking up on some new Type 1 PFDs and maybe an EPIRB) .... Am hoping to get some serious Kerisi Bali over the 10kg mark and some serious Japanese reds + of course mega Amberjacks 'cos I'm a glutton for punishment...

Happy 2006 to you and all of FO.

Regards,

Saimee

Saimee,

Those long nose emperors were really good fighter. The trip before us ... they landed 250 ++ pieces on average 6kgs with biggest top to 10kgs.

This trip only 1 800 grams kerisi bali caught ... we were fishing around 70M (deepest) water. I would like to comment on the good solid parking by our boatman MR Sotong. He is damm solid lah.

No MJ caught by us at all ... (I am hoping to land them also). We were invited to fish with the fleet owner on the 3rd and 4th of chinese new year but alas i do not have any more leaves left and also am going to Lucornia during March.

Tight lines and hopefully 1 day we will have a chance to fish at your water.

Cheers,
Edy

Yo,

No House of Hardy Zane Grey from the land of the Union Jack??

I was just chatting with Edy... IMHO, if he thought those long nose emperor & jobbies pulled hard, wait till he tangled with those Chinaman fish. Man ........ those buggers can pull your guts out; just like the biggie red emperors & MJ's!!! Inedible due to ciguetera, but a true blue sport fish. There was one afternoon at the GBR when my buddies went diving & I was left to my own devices ... every drop one C-man between 5-10kg before the reds moved in. Thankfully, we were anchored in shallow waters, but my arms still nearly left their sockets after about 5-6 fishes!!! Do you get much C-man in Bruneian waters?

Best regards,
Makaira

Mak,

For some reason the C-men seem to be afraid of Brunei waters and they are a pretty rare catch.... Whats funny is that just across the Eastern sea border in the big reef area called Semarang Bank, the C-men are known to be pretty avaiable along with Mr Longnosed....

I haven't caught a C-man yet, but I too have heard that they are a great fighter, just look at the size of their tail fins..... quite similar to the big REs and Mr MJ.... hmmmm.... I must admit that I have a soft spot for Mr Longnose... he and his brethen once kept me company thru out what would have been a pretty slow night, when after singlehandedly decimating the local baracudda population (more out of frustration at the number of lost good fish earlier due to the cudas), all I did was pick off LN after LN from 1am till dawn.... I had quite a collection at the end of that....

Edy,

Next time if you head down Sabah side, I could try and get a crew together, actually we have been planning for some time to run a trip to KK, with one team bringing our big centre console via sea and another team bringing 2 or 3 4WDs overland.... then we would be covered both avenues for fishing, just that it would not be my local waters and I would have to rely on exploration or local area tips.

regards,

Saimee

I have done day trips of such distance in a 27 footer twin outboards before .... but not brave enough to do an overnighter. Or at least the boat owner wasn't The fuel bill is ..... how can I put it ....... suffering catfish!!!!!

Edy,

Thats cool dude, you going to join the Labuan Rolex Tournament?. It can be a great opportunity to fish some of the waters that are protected by the Malaysian Navy and have restricted access usually. What team will you be with if you go?.

Mak...

Ahhh, well, yes we are a bit gung-ho and I reckon it will be a solo 33ft vessel, with twin outboards.... maybe might bring along another 28ft vessel with twins or triples.

Last year in a fit of total gung-honess (similar to tackle-honess just more foolhardy) I did hit a spot 90km offshore using a 23ft single engined vessel, but the sea conditions were just FAC dude and we spotted a commercial fishing ship within sight, so we took a chance.

As for fuel, since Brunei is the last bastion of cheap fuel in SE Asia, the bill would be in the region of B$300 based on a 30% safety margin.... which ain't too bad actually split 4-5 ways. Usually we will anchor up around 60km offshore, usually within 1-2km from an oilrig (so we are out of a shipping lane) and then do the jump to the further spot just before dawn... 40-50km is less than an hours run, so its not too bad and the places we anchor at night are usually good MJ spots...

Yeah baby am looking forward to the calm months already and have been planning some of the trips with the crew....

Hey, why not start a post on everybodies fishing plans/ambitions for this year.... could be interesting.

Tight lines, silky drags.

Saimee

oh so that's the one that sotong and his brother always participate in. The "spratly competition" as some call it. Thanks!
