My Mood: Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Miri Catch Report Last monday someone ring me up ask to go Miri dropoff fishing together, when he show me the pics....wow, 35kg grouper and a few 10kg over grouper + 10kg over big ruby snapper, smallest also 6 over kg. So i silently going down on friday morning enjoy first, saturday morning 9am all 12 anglers appeared, consists of 1 from Brunei, 3 from marudi, 1 from Sibu, the rest all from Miri fishing association n tackle shops owner. It takes 4.5 hours headed to our first dropoff spot, sea flat like mirror, the sounder shows 84.5 i closed my finger count 84.5 x 3 =253.5ft only, current flow excellent but my biomaster 8000pg + 300m tuff line + 250g jig cannot hit bottom, what the hell is going wrong here?????? ask the boatman kenapa he reply : ani sounder kira DAPAR atau SIAM which means 84.5 x 6 = 507ft....aiya they should tell early mah which mean my PE#4 combo cannot be used here. I look around other anglers arsenal....oh...,Stella 10k HG, Stella 20k FA, 8000sw, Ocea 4000P, Kaikon 4000, 6500 Dogfight.... oh yes, i'm the only 20k SW sure win...hehe...but suddently Nelson (chairman of Miri fishing association) show his Miya Epoch command x4 and said....deep water how to jig, must used electric reel lah... all other anglers quickly "mai-su-lang" showed their new model command X4 HP reel, die lah, this trip become battle of electric reel, whole trip only hear zi..zi..zi..wu..wu..wu...stop..stop...sangkut, sangkut...cha beehoon liao... Boat....73' x 15' simple toilet, no aircond n no rod holder 2d1n price rm3k including transport on/off airport Excluding meal n drinks Max 15 anglers on board. My Mood: Rep Power: 3 ![]() | MarkR Pls only include boat rental, airport pick up n depart. Excluding hotel n food, better call Ah Ti for more detail cos' my trip are special "test drive" trip 4 tackle shop n charter guide. Btw, Miri anglers all draw for thier seat ie...left side 1-6, right side 7-12 and DO NOT simply moved to other people place no matter your line go underneath the boat or sunburn. So if you guys 1 2 come better book whole charter, frankly i don't really like their way of fishing cos' always sangkut. |

My Mood: Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Of course got small fish lah shame to show people mah!!! The iban guy next to me 140qt cooler box full house but luck not with me only 2 small 6-7kg Amberjack dance with me. Saimee, Yes, 3 el-cheapo 40-80lbs boat rods broke during this trip (Abu, Daiwa and 1 custom rod), the 2 guys hook up something big, their Daiwa sealine sized like 16s and ocea EV totally cannot crank , after all snap thier line, i feel like six gill but they said should be big rays (they say lots of mama rays that area). |

My Mood: Rep Power: 3 ![]() | MarkR, I'm sure Ruby biggest caught 13kg, Amberjack 11.5kg on our boat, the other boat (Kassim boat)17.5kg ruby. The rest of the report was from Brunei Seria anglers......with pics, and that's the reason why i going down last week.....but unlucky that i draw no.9 seat which mean sunburned and line go underneath the boat number, so just fulling around only. Kindly review my x-posting at catch report : Miri fishing competition, that's the spot we went. Last edited by 12345 : 10-07-2006 at 11:30 PM. |

This is the Miri side of the dropoff I reckon, not the same area I fished recently which is more on the eastern side of Brunei waters. There is a deep ocean trench called the Pahlawan Trench that runs from the Philippines, east to west axis, and runs parallel to the north eastern Borneo coastline. It terminates roughly above Miri in the Hayes Reef and Lucornia area. This is why these areas used to produce some really good catches. The Miri side is like the end of a 2000m deep drain and it rises up to just metres below the surface in some areas in Lucornia. I am sure that the Miri captains have a whole bunch of spots in that area in addition to their own FADs, so the potential is certainly there as you have seen from 12435s Catch Report. Good luck dude, if you want, PM me the dates you are there...maybe I wander over Miri side to say hello at sea....hehehehehe. Regards, Saimee

My Mood: Rep Power: 6 ![]() ![]() | Hi Saimee, Would like to meet you in person someday. We've got enough numbers to make the trip now but have to settle the dates. Air asia flight timings look like they'll fit into a "commando style" short trip too. Good luck with Mike and his gang at month's end. Tight lines, Mark |

My Mood: Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Gamefish site long time didn't login liao, Kassim and Tom are 2 best boatman in Miri, Kassim boat smaller, slower and very rocky, heard he charge rm2500, Tom are operating Marudi new boat now. If you onboard Tom boat the way he anchored you'll fell like he's driving Evo 9. Remember to bring your own rod holder n food, if lazy ask Ah Ti to handle everything then. |

Which boat you take, Kassim or Tom? you r right gamefish ws pics was Kassim boat. It depends on what fish targetting mah, inshore where got Amberjack n Ruby? I'm pretty sure border dropoff still got big school of fish cos' it's newly explored, if sampah besi area dropoff i'm not sure cos' almost everybody have the spot liao.... My Mood: Rep Power: 6 ![]() ![]() | Hi Cheng, Not too familiar with the geography in that area, but like yourself I do believe there's good potential for some big deep bottom dwellers. Hope to get my trip sorted out in late August, most likely Ah Ti's boat. Emailed Nelson for more info too. Good luck fishing and continue to post those tantilizing Miri CRs! Cheers, Mark |
