Rep Power: 5 ![]() | Lumut – 7th August 2004 to 10th August 2004 It was a much-anticipated trip because this was a long planned trip. Like tens of thousands of Singaporean, Edy and I utilized this long weekend travel north for a very much-needed getaway-fishing trip in Lumut. Where we find ourselves stuck in the second link traffic for no less then 3 hours with 3 of our fishing buddies for this trip. Day 1 – 7th August 2004 After surviving the second link traffic jam, it was a smooth and long ride up north to Kuala Lumpur, we stopped at a supermarket along the way to grab drinks, snacks and tit-bits for the trip. We managed to reach and check in to a hotel in the outskirt of Kuala Lumpur by dinnertime. Being typical Singaporean, none of us could resist the temptation of food, we find ourselves snacking at the nearby eatery first thing after check in. Dinner was sumptuous local favoured seafood dinners with the organiser this trip. We took every opportunity to bombard the organiser with questions to clear all our doubts, as this is the first time we will be fishing in Lumut. And no fishing trip will be complete without a drinking session! Right after dinner, the organiser invited us to join him at a country club karaoke pub with his friends. The night ended after a fun-filled beer drowning exercise at a local pub near our hotel. Day Two – 8th August 2004 We check out of the hotel early to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Lumut, stopping in between to have our breakfast. 3 hours later we arrived at the marina in Lumut where we board our fishing boat, which will first take us to Pangkor Island for lunch, at the same time, they will also pick up the ice and baits, mainly squid and kembung. Fishing with us where a group of Malaysian anglers whom were all experts in their own game of bottom fishing especially with electric reels. Honestly speaking this is the first time we seen anglers using electric reels. 95% of their fishing process was automated; pressing the button is all it takes for them to haul up their catches. So I’ve concluded that their fishing motto should be “Let My Finger Do The Fishing” We hit the jackpot spot that late evening; it started with a double hook and every 3 minutes someone from our side will haul in something. After a 30 minutes frenzy, the action came to a halt. The rest of the day passed by with occasional action every now and then around the boat, until about 3am in the morning when one of the Malaysian anglers brought in a 10.6kg grouper. Day Three – 9th August 2004 Usual action around the boat, with occasions where we hit those jackpot spots for brief moments. Edy’s fate changed right after he broke his fishing rod, the rod he loan from Henry seems to change his luck. Not long after he landed his 2.9kg grouper, he got a heavy take and a good hook up. Edy fought the monster for at least 5 minutes before his 50lbs leader decided to snap and gave way to the abrasion. From 2pm till 11pm action around the boat came almost to a complete halt. We waited patiently at a few Tengirri spots for them to turn up, but it seems that the Tengirri school decided to take an alternative route that day. Meanwhile, I’ve decided to utilize that stagnant period to chat with our very humorous and entertaining captain. I’ve discovered that this fishing boat is well equipped. Apart from the usual standard echo sounder and GPS navigation tools, it comes equipped with satellite phone and radar scan. The fishing actions resume right after we shifted to new spot, rewarding those who managed to fight the Z monster and stay awake for the last lag of this fishing trip. Day Four – 10th August 2004 This fishing trip came officially to an end at 7am, overall results was good, everybody got their icebox filled with fishes to take home for family, relatives and friends. The 3˝ hours journey back provide us the opportunity to take a quick nap, conduct a stand by fish photo taking session, distribute the catches among ourselves and a quick shower, before we reach at Pangkor Island for brunch. After the group phone taking session at the jetty, we travelled 8 hours via road from Lumut back to Singapore. Both Edy and me conclude that this is by far our most productive trip. Although there we caught no record breaking huge monsters, but the overall package was just fantastic. Our fishing buddies had been great, they provided us the perfect company for the entire trip, the fishing boat is comfortable, food served on boat was tasty, and fishing action was good. |
