Helang Hit & Run

Trip was put together by Jigdemon after 12345's recent record GT trip at the Helang Oil Rig

Left Singapore at 4am yesterday and returned at 8pm today

Partners in crime: Jigdemon, ChrisT, Galanted, MarkR
Miri accomplices: Matsutageh, Poland & Seahorse

Reached Miri at 2pm yesterdy afternoon, took a short nap and by 6pm we were off at 25 knots plus in a twin 200hp speedboat. Reached Helang at approx 830pm...very impressive sight for the Singapore guys who were all oil rig virgins

First drop and Boss Matsutageh scored with a nice GT around the 10kg mark...Seahorse was next with a GT and a big eye jack....we had many hits throughout the night both on jig and on Matsutageh's twin hook bait rig...quite a few bust-offs too...I had a huge take with my Nagamasa...set the hook a couple of times and at that instant, on almost full locked drag, the monster decided to show who was boss with a huge dive that had my VX500 double over...then suddenly *piak* !!! Thought the rod had broken....but instead, the 50kg Whiplash had dug into the bottom layers of line......haiz...Jigdemon had an unstoppable monster grab his jig at the bottom in the morning too...Matsutageh had a jig cut into half

Overall we landed about 10 GTs with the biggest weighed at 28kg by Jigdemon. All GTs were released. I managed to land an Amberjack, a first at Helang it seems at daybreak. We lost quite a few fish to structure (we were using 200lb leader)...not just the monsters but some of the more average sized fish too

Must say that the hit rate was very good for just 12 hours of fishing...will be back for a revenge trip

ChrisT will be uploading the pics soon

ChrisT,

Do you notice the GT different from Louisa? Aiya if i know you n MarkR going sure go Miri coffee. Heard sea was rough, luckly still can go out, tropical storm hit our region at 40-50 knots everyday especially at night, for those who plan to go Helang kindly make it next month.

Re: Helang Hit & Run

Hi Edy,

We fished at one location only ie. Helang rig. Some of us got leave problem hence the commando style trip

There are seriously big GTs there.....

If I do get the opportunity to do another trip to Helang, i'd fly in the day before to get some rest first. Getting kinda old for these hectic short trips

Hi buddy,

Bao tio MILFs there but landing them is another story altogether...next time must bring trolling gear with low speed to jig for them...hook-up immediately switch to low gear and use the rail....

ChrisT using PE10 and 200lb fisherman leader still kenna bully

How much they charge to you guys, RM 2k? normally i pay fuel only. Coming 10 aug. M1 n M3 trip hope i can make it.

As i mention b4 it's kind of force fishing, totally different from open water, hows the feel, good?

Cheng,

1st time jigging for GT and Louisa was popping - so can't really tell the difference. I caught a small GT so can't really compare but Jigdemon felt it fought much harder jigging - due to the depths and the flat bodies of the GT which made it hard work.

Hi Cheng,

Yes, around that ballpark figure for boat charter...chance of hitting MOAG very high but it's "force fishing" as you have said...can be a bit stressful

If you're referring to oil rig / gas platform jigging, you'll probably need heavy stuff - PE8 jigging rod and Stella 20k or Ocea Jigger. Need the umph to stop those MOAG!!! Such tackle will not guarentee you will stop the fish. I was using PE10 200lb leader and still lost the fish!
