Bluewater Fishing Expedition

Five certify yellowfin tuna fisherman wannabe, joined Edy and myself on the very morning of Good Friday, spent their one and only holiday off for the month of April travelling with us; by both land and air to finally reach the small coastal town of this natural resources rich country, late that evening, hoping to score some tunas (preferably the big yellowfins) over the next two days, were disappointed one the very first day, by the seafood dinner.

Fuelled with hunger and enthusiasm of landing Yellowfin Tunas, we finished most of the dishes we ordered even they tasted terrible.

Day one ended with all the seven of us bunking in a double deck bed filled, square shaped room, together a few ang mohs, at the backpacker style divers’ lodge, before waking up bright and early the next day to transfer ourselves from main land to the island, so as to launch our fishing expedition from there.

And because there were a total seven of us and the maximum number angler each sampan can hold was four, Edy and I set off in different sampan, searching for GT.

GT none of us caught any, not even a fish of a decent size, that, the two dudes on board of the sampan with me, decides to venture to the island near where we were fishing for a dip in the clear water radiating a turquoise hue. And the three of us were back relaxing and playing cards back in the fishing village, by early afternoon.

We knew Edy and gangs’ perseverance paid off when we saw them came back to shore with Dorados, Wahoos, Tripletail and a small Yellowfin Tuna sitting nicely in their icebox.

Listening to them narrate their sighting of Whale and Marlin surfacing near their sampan while fishing, and all the fun they had whacking one Dorado after another, over beers; makes us want to kick ourselves in the arse for not continuing fishing and came back to kampong early.

All thanks to Edy and gang, we had Dorados and Wahoos for barbeque and Yellowfin Tuna for sashimi.

We did much better on day two of fishing than on day one, for, everyone (except me) caught something. The highlight on our sampan would be the twenty-two pounds Yellowfin Tuna caught by Shu Wen on a set of light fishing tackle he uses for pay pond fishing while luring.

Baring no hopes of getting a Yellowfin Tuna, after spending his entire morning and early afternoon jigging non-stop and doing a bit of baiting, hunting for one. Shu Wen decides to go for some Dorado action, casts right into a school of surfacing tunas.

One crank. Yes! One crank is all it took for that twenty-two pounds Yellowfin Tuna to hit his lure.

Next thing we saw was Shu Wen fighting hard to hold on to his no thicker than a strain of egg noodle rod and heard his reel scream like as if it got dragged by a speeding train.

Then, history repeats itself a few hours later when again he casts right into, again, the middle of a surfacing school of Tuna. But this time he was not as lucky, for, the tuna peels almost all of the line out of the reel within the span of no more than five seconds, before snapping the braided line.

Meanwhile, on the other sampan, Edy landed a twenty-two pounds Yellowfin Tuna via popping. With the rest of the anglers on board of the sampan Edy was on, landing the usual suspects; Dorados and Wahoos.

The lack of Yellowfin Tunas for this trip was made up by the nighttime chat session over peanuts and beers we had on the balcony.

On the final day of our this fishing trip, was all rest and relax.

Those boys who wanted to meet Nemo, went snorkelling, while the others tagged along with Edy and I, travelled the surrounding waters, exploring the nearby islands to see how locals lead their life, how they grow, harvest, and treat a coral-like-seaweed-looking organism for living and to buy live crabs back for lunch.

And no fishing trip is complete until we checked their main town out and buy home some of their local speciality, before we fly home.

Although, not everyone from our this group caught what we came for (except for Edy and Shu Wen), but I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that over the course of the four days three nights we all benefited from the good company and the time off from our hectic schedule.

Now, who says go out fishing, catch no fish, is a bad thing.

Don't get me wrong there , it's a good one but will be better with video clips , don't you agree ?

As for work harder , I think you should fish harder and as far as YellowFin Tunas
are concerned , yesterday on Day 1 of the Rolex - IGFA sponsored tournament in Ujung Kulon , a participant caught a 76.8 kg speciment , unfortunately by trolling .

The guy won a US$. 11k jackpot for shattering the 55 kg mark pegged
by the sponsor .

, I guess next year the peg wud be an 80 kg
YellowFin Tuna , at least .

Jon, honestly, do you think a Stella 20K could have landed that YellowFin Tuna

@ 76kgs that fish would have either stripped a spinner bone dry in a flash or it would have been sharked if the angler took too long to land it. I've never hooked, let alone land a big YellowFin Tuna but two things I DO KNOW is- There are big bad sharks @ UK and the waters there are REALLY deep (so even if the YFT doesn't fly into the horizon, it can sound and still strip you)

Do you happen to have a photo of that YellowFin Tuna

Myself landed a 67 kg YellowFin Tuna last year in 5 minutes n 5 seconds and I was using the '98 Stella 10000PG with PE5 Varivas Avani GT line so in my opinion it is possible to land that 76.8 kg YFT with SW20000PG which
can accomodate 600m of PE6 Varivas Avani GT , the question is , if it goes into prolonged fight , wud the older angler like me withstand the
ordeal ?

As for photo , I am sure it will be posted but today is just the 2nd day of competition , there are 2 more days to go and they are in Ujung Kulon so the photos must wait till they come back .

Attached is my 67 kg YellowFin Tuna caught last year in P.Ratu .

With a fast boat chasing the fish, I think such a fish can be landed on big powerful spinner. On an anchored boat, it could be a problem imho. As far as sharks are concerned, it is a matter of luck -- they may not always be around to whomp on a hooked fish. Having said that, on extended fights in shark infested waters, Mr Jaws will always pose a problem.

Hi Jon, think I've seen that photo sometime ago... just did not realise the YellowFin Tuna was over 60kg. If I'm not mistaken a Japanese angler took one of those local boats out to the same area you mentioned and landed a big YFT too.

Last year records were , a 70 kg ( Mr. B. Salim ) , a 67 kg ( your's trully ) , a 65 kg ( Mr. A. Burhanuddin ) and a 63 kg ( The Japanese anglers ) , there were many come close to 60 kg mark in 50+ kg .

Apparently for this year the record has been improved , we will target 80 kg now that Mr. S. Nursewan has caught a 76.8 kg YellowFin Tuna and today another angler lost a big one after 4+ hrs fighting the fish .

Better contact Capt. R. Barraclough and head for Ujung Kulon !
