1 day Rompin Trip - 16th April

Group of 9 went in 2 cars on Friday evening. Was in the car with Mike, Bryan and Kevin with Mark driving. Rick was driving the other car with Hock, Kiat and Alfie. We reached Rompin at around 1am as we stopped for dinner at JB and hunted around for a money changer as well.

Was my 2nd trip to Rompin after more than a 2 year break so was looking forward to seeing the sails again. Mike had a friend check the weather report earlier and the sea was expected to be rough 1-2 metre swells but when we met Ah Liang at night, he said it should be okay the next day.

The single storey bunglow house that was booked for the night was in the area where there was a power blackout. Fortunately Ah Liang manage to get 2 rooms on top of the shop houses area and 2 guys (Mike and Kevin) volunteered to sleep in the hall.

The sky was covered with grey clouds when we set off on Ah Liang's and Ah Xiang's boats (Mike, Bryan, Mark, Kevin and me were on the Ah Xiang's boat). We encountered several 1 metre swells on the way out to sea. Fortunately, the sea was calmer as we went further out. There was a small area in the horizon that showed bright blue sky and a bit of the sun and we set off towards that area.

First area we took out our sabikis hooks and fished for bait fish brought up a 8-9" gt (golden). Caught by Mark. Didn't catch too many baitfish in this area so we moved to the next unjam. The sun was shining brightly at the 2nd unjam and we brought up quite a number of tamban and selars. Bryan and Kevin were bringing in the bait fish pretty fast with Mark and myself a far second. Mike was practising his jigging and if I remember correctly, he lost his jig when his line was bitten off (no wire leader)

Ah Xiang then helped to set 2 lines out with balloons, cycle hooks and live bait. Some of the guys started doing their popping and jigging. Bryan went back to jigging for bait after popping for a while and kept bringing up more baitfish.

Kevin decided to try live baiting from the side of the boat and got a strong hook up. Bent his light rod into a upside down 'U' and caused his reel to scream continuing for just under a minute before the fish escaped (line broke or was bitten off).

After a while, my balloon started going up and down before it burst as it was pulled below the surface and my reel started screaming. Fought the fish for 5 seconds before the line broke (line bitten off)

The neighbouring boat carrying 2 ang mohs had 2 hookups a short distance away (one after the other - 2 small sails). Inspiring but no action on our end apart from a metre long todak which didn't give much of a fight. We moved to another spot and after a while the neighbouring boat also arrived. They had another hookup but the sail escaped.

Ah Xiang then moved onto another spot and we started to troll as suggested by Mark. After trolling for a short while with live bait, there was a hook-up and Bryan or Mark brought in the first Queenfish (about 1/2 arm's length). Short while later, the 2nd queenfish was caught. After no further action, Ah Xiang anchored again. It was around 4pm when the 3rd queenfish was hooked up (this was larger than the earlier 2). Unfortunately it died before it could be released.

At around 4.15pm, I had a hard jerk on my rod and fought the fish for about 10 seconds when the line went slack. Thought the fish had gotten away but the guys kept shouting to reel in so I did and true enough, the fish was still there (fish had turned towards the boat). Fought it for another 10 seconds but then the line broke (Ah Xiang had tied a 10" wire leader so it was quite frustratng that the fish managed to cut the line above that)

Mike then helped to rig another mono leader to my line (80 lbs but no wire) and took the biggest selar as bait and led the line out. I decided to lie down at 5pm (given up hope of catching a sail). Bryan then pointed to my rod which was jerking slightly and said my balloon had left the line. Thought it was the baitfish pulling the line so I took my time to get there.

Bryan was quite sure something had taken the bait and quickly handed my rod to me, by then the reel started screaming. Mike had set my Safari at max drag but the sail still managed to pull line out but managed to pull it in after 10 minutes with some coaching from the guys.

Sail was released quickly after it was brought up and it swam away. We then set off for shore and after washing up left for a restaurant just on the outskirts of Mersing.

Great 2nd trip for a newbie like me (realized how much I missed the sound of my reel screaming and the pull of a large fish like a sail) and definitely appreciated the 4 pros accomodating me on the trip (only old one there whose IC number starts with a '1' yet these younger guys are many many years ahead in terms of their fishing knowledge and experience).

Many thanks to Mark for organizing this and doing all the driving to Rompin and back to Singapore (and sending us to our homes) even though he was really exhausted and Mike for inviting me to come along and Bryan and Kevin for their company and advice during the trip.

Hi Alvin,

Wow. Very detailed blow by blow account of the trip. And don't like that say leh, the IC number joke was not directed at you.

Anyway, it was a pleasure having you on board. I'm glad that the only sail landed that day was landed by you. Hope you get a chance to fish again soon!

hello Mr RK, how's things getting man.... yes i'm with them but this time round seems that everything went wrong, so sorry guys unlike the Mar'05 trip where everything from bottom, live baiting, trolling, jigging to even popping was just perfect... almost like those fishing video that we can buy from the store but seriously all boats fare just as bad as us on that lousy day, we are consider the lucky ones already given the condition some didn't even get to see the sail up close hahaha....

how's your latest outing? i'm sure your kids must have enjoy it alot :P lets see when we could arrange a get together and talk over a cup of coffee ok?

cheers
mark

p.s. Mike now i know why you didn't catch anything on jigs liao.... cause you are practising it, next time when out fishing dun practise liao just fish hahaha and poor Bryan, after roughing it out with you in the living room it was kevin that got the credit hahaha.....
