Tanjung Pinang Catch Report ( 2-4June 07 )

First of all, a big thank you to all who went for this trip.To my bro-in law,Ahmad and Salim,
thanx for getting me in this trip,i truly enjoyed this first trip of mine

DAY 1 (2jun)

Met the rest of the anglers at Tanah Merah Terminal @0730,checked in our stuffs at @0920 and set off
to Tanjung Pinang @1020hrs.Reached Tanjung Pinang @1230hrs,straight to the boat which we will be on for 3 days and off we go.
Boatman was AM along with his five other crews.I personally rate their service oustanding.Friendly and
easy going bunch this crew.Was informed that journey will take about 8hrs to reach spot,so we had ample
time to lunch,set up our tackles,enjoying the scenery of the islands along the way,and most of all:SLEEP.
This will be mostly done during this 3days trip..heheh

Reached first spot @2145-2200hrs,was feeling giddy but still managed to fish thruout the nite
Crew cut the frozen squid baits in strips,and all lines were down in an instant.No live baits as it was
full moon thruout.Fist to hit was Wahid with a medium sized ray.I got the next with my first cobia ever,
hehe,one of my wish fulfilled.Rest were getting small bulats too and sum other varieties.After untangling
all the lines dat the cobia swam around to,i rebait and down again,hadn't even lit my ciggie yet,and my rod
bent down hard,with rachet sounding hard.Couldn't lift the rod out from the holder for a moment,once done
line was still peeling out fast.Drag was set to 7kg,had push to full strike,but it was still pulling out line.This went
on for about 15mins,i haven't even had the chance of getting my line in much.Reeled in a bit ,and it pulled again.
Held on till the line went slack,thought rig or hook had gave way,upon reaching evrything was still intact.This
had got me all excited and shaken.A first encounter with a big one.Had to take a breather after dat...Phewwwww!
Rest of the nite,Ali Batu 3 had another big cobia,while the rest had sum assortments too.
When current started to pick up @0430hrs we stopped ,set off to another spot few hrs away.Using handline
with size 35 sinker here cant even hold it down.Off to the cabin for the lot of us.

DAY 2 (3Jun)

Woke up @0730hrs,current was still strong,so sat down and enjoyed the sunrise over the horizon.Boatman
said dat current would slow down few hours later,so had to make do with it.Fished on off during our stay here,
varieties of catches caught.Left to another spot @1400hrs,which woul take about an hour or so.
At this spot,more varieties consisting of bulats,reds,longnose emperors,sweetlip were caught.
At about @1730,this was when most of us had bigger catches of reds,Jahans(big cattie est8kg),Ahmad getting a
Chermin est @7kg or so on handline and me getting one about the same range too soon after ..another dreamfish fulfilled .Nor had another cobia here too.
Set off again to another spot ,but since current was strong again when we were there,after about 2-2.5hrs,
boatman decided to change spot which was about another 1 to 2hrs journey.What else,time to doze off again.
I woke up @2300hrs,boat had anchored and my line was already down.Here i got 3 more catties,and current
was still strong.So after about 2hrs of fishing,decided to call it a day for this trip since it was already @0200hrs,
and feeling tired.But a wonderful closing ceremony for all,especially for JM,who got an Ang Ko Li(hope i spelled
it right),the one and only for the whole trip,est 5-6kgs.
Few photo taking and down i went to the cabin where some had already dozed off.

DAY3 (4jUN)

Woke up about @0730hrs and saw that we were already around the nearby islands before Tanjung Pinang.
All packed up their tackles,followed by the crews sorting the catches.After much posing with the
biggies,all catches were cut up,cleaned and catches were divided equally among anglers.
Cleaned up and evryone bunked in again dozing thru the remainder of the journey.
Reached Tanjung Pinang jetty 1330hrs,had lunch,did some shopping and left Tanjung Pinang @1700hrs.
Back in mainland Singapore @1900hrs,cleared customs@1930hrs,bade farewell to all and left for home.
An enjoyable trip for me,and definitely will be going again.Dates booked for next year

Hi bro what a wonderful trip and catches you guys had.

Care to share what kind of tackle you use(light, medium or heavy). What sinker size and hook size ? Also what rig is use?

Hi Din,

Nice catches from Tanjung Pinang. You guys must have travelled quite a distance hmnmn 8 hours journey.

The "Ang Ko Li" fish you mentioned is Kerisi Ibu which is fairly common in Sabah water. I am quite surprised to see it caught in Tanjung Pinang.

Any Golden Snapper landed?

i use 50lbs power pro,paired with pe3-6 rod.Sinker sizes 12-16.
normal ranggong with rig about two arms length

ya..mostly at a wreck area.Golden snapper u mean ACK?Only got one
by me.
At last,used the avet for this trip.And need to get gloves too,
my left thumb got cuts by the line when those biggies were peeling line

Hi Bro,

Your group should have an enjoyable time pulling so many fishes. Although it was a Full moon and strong current date, the fishes are still taking the kelong squids. Only trouble, we have to travel further to get a decent catch in Tanjung Pinang area.

Thnx..It was the boatman's spots,yeah luckily the fishes were hitting the
frozen squids.In sg u use frozen squids would be catties haven!hehe

Thanx ziyang,go with an open mind,dont put up hopes too high and be
thankful with what catches u get.
Join with other anglers who have been there often,so they might be able to
help,guide u when fishing.Hope this helps

Haha... . i'm juz keen in fishing whether i got any fish anot, doesn't realli matter to me. Just want to fish for the sick of the interest. Rite anot bro. Haha... thanks you very much for your tips. When i'm free, i will go there to fish then share with you my story.

Hooks size,i used owner hooks size 6/0 for bottom thruout the trip,
but if current not too strong,u can use apollo rigs with size3/0 ,4/0 ranges.
These are some pointers that i got from those who frequent there.
Dont be afraid to ask the crew on what setup is good on that particular
area when u're there.
