I am particularly interesting in the 'big' one that got away. Did you retrieve all the terminal tackle? Is the hook faulty/straighten?

None was lost bro, ranggong, sinker, rig retrieved still intact.

Nice variety of fishes there

Based on the travelling time & fishes landed(especially the kerisi ibu & japanese red), fishing grounds you guys had fished are probably near to Merapas or Lingga/Singkep & not typical Tanjung Pinang trips around Berakit/Mapur.

It's rather rare to land kerisi ibu around Berakit/Mapur waters though japanese red are landed occasionally.

Rgds,

Din,

Thanks for the confirmation regarding fishing grounds.

Japanese red is also called choon kuey in Bintan. The english name sound something like krissler or so when I last read on a book about fishes names.

Indeed Japanese red(especially those >3Kg) fights pretty well & offers very good tackle fun on light tackle set(#15-20). When they are around in school(can be in the hundreds), they can be mid water feeders. Small size hooks(2/0-4/0) with short thin strips of bait(fish meat or squid) is the ideal rig. Greedy fellows & not leader shy at all. Apollo rig get them too in mid-waters before bait reaches seabed.

The following is an old thread discussion by MarkR on Kerisi Ibu & Kerisi Bali
The real "Kerisi Bali"

Perhaps local names for different places differs & will have to refer to fishbase names for common reference.

YS,
Think i best stick to Kerisi..if it's a big one, then KERISI BEsarRRR punye!!!
hehe.
On the 2nd day,the angler who got the Kerisi had a take, while reeling
in,this one was peeling his line most of the time too,but was surprised to
see a dead sweetlip, pale as can be,eyes, body all white with bite marks
when he got it onboard. He ws saying"wah...i hooked a dead fish ah??".
The boatman was guessing a big grouper got hold of the sweetlip midway.

Rgds,
din
