Komodo results .

Guys ,

This is the best fish from Group 1 which is a 38+ kg , already ecliped by the Group 2 in their first day , image to follow in due course .

We use fish's dimensions to formulate the weight of the fish , the formula has been proven to be accurate within a kg either way .

Nice pic Sportfisherman! More please, thanks!

Must plan for a Komodo trip sometime but need a new 78EXH after a mishap in Rodrigues when my mate tried to cast like Fukui-san

Hi Mark R ,

What happened to that SP78EX-H ?

Here is a photo of the biggest catch by 2nd group fishing Sumba n Komodo ,
the fish is estimated to be 55+ kg based on the accepted dimensions formula among the European GT anglers .

Hi Sportfisherman,

My SP78-EXH met an untimely and unfortunate end at the hands of a fellow angler...one of the worst possible ways to lose a rod

One of my mates (now ex-mate) had a miss cast and the trebles on his popper caught on to one of the tip guides of the 78-EXH...the rest as they say is history...the force completely ripped off the tip section of the 78-EXH and the top 3 guides...

Anyway, I'm thankful that I didn't lose any body parts in the process....and obviously there is not the slightest chance that i'm gonna cast next to this fellow in the future

Great big GTs at Komodo! Was there a reel failure?

Tight lines

Hi Mark R ,

Accident happens but yes , it still heart breaking to have been caused by somebody else . Can't you repair the rod ? And if so , your friend should pay for the repair works .

Everyone should be carefull when casting , places like Komodo is so far away from any hospital let alone good hospital , I imagine Rodriguez is the same so everybody must measure up their casting before doing so .

This time there is a Saltiga 6000GT that had one of it's foot broken , I am not sure of the details how this happened but if you check with GTFisherman , perhaps he would be willing to relate on how thing like this can happen . What I know is that they manage to bring the fish by handlining the PE line , one end is tied to the fish and the other end tied to the reel , both underwater ! Here is the photo !

Hi Sportfisherman,

I don't think the rod can be repaired, perhaps I wasn't clear but along with 2 guides, a good 8 to 12 inches of the tip section was entirely ripped off It doesn't matter too much now but I'm really thankful the popper didn't slam into my head...I have heard horror stories of a popper dangling from someone's eyelid while he sat out an 8 hour journey back to port in the Maldives...phew...comprehensive travel insurance is a must for these far away trips.

Worrying to see another Saltiga GT failure, I hope the dogfight has a stronger stem...nice & light and a joy to crank but hopefully structurally beefier too

i was told by Pat as follows:

Quote:

I believe the saltiga and my reel seat broke due to an error on our part. When the guys connected my support harness bar they didn't double it and secure it close to the stem of the reel seat putting enourmous pressure on the stem of the reel.
Hope it helps.

PS. Juan I helped you edited the post to show quote the syntax is /quote with [] in between it. (edylie)

Hi Jon,

Awesome GT...well done. The angler is using a single assist hook on the belly of the popper...is that correct...or my eyes are failing me???hehee

"Ex"? Bro Mark

Please let me buy you a new rod to atone for my misdeed ok (seriously)....what say you old pal? You can pm me your reply (seriously...seriously)

Come on guys help me out here....actually I was relieved there was no personal injury to anyone. I am really quite uncomfortable with casting on boats and I think I got a bit carried away after landing my first fish on popper

Kinda reminds me of my little mishap on Jon's boat years ago... my poppper caught onto my spare outfit (lying on the inflatable boat at Searcher's bow) and I flung my VS300 + popping rod (can't remember what rod it is now...) over the sides Luckily the VS is built for dunking and the outfit was still stuck on my hook. Managed to pull the outfit back onboard. Potentially expensive lesson!

Good to know Komodo is still producing decent sized GT!

I am not much of a popping fanatic, but when I do pop, there is one simple rule I always follow.

ALWAYS LOOK (BEHIND YOU) BEFORE LEAP (OR IN THIS CASE, CAST)

Do this without fail on every cast, and the likelihood of mishaps will be lessened considerably. Not all boats have the luxury of a dedicated popping area, but whatever the situation may be, ALWAYS be aware of where your popper is behind you before you swing!!!!

Mikey,

Lucky your popper didn't get stuck on the inflatable, that would have been a "video moment" . Having seen how some of you boys whip your poppers when fishing up in the bow, I usually take cover at the back of the boat and pray that nothing gets caught in the guides, T-Top, Railing, Soft Tissue etc etc....

Thats also why I carry a pair of mini bolt cutters on the boat for those 5X Trebles you guys like to arm those missles with

Pop safe and heed the wise words of Master Makaira....

And another recently learned lesson for me.... never trust a big Cobia at boatside.... I have a fresh monofilament burn on my right index finger and a lost AFTCO Gaff to account for that lesson....

Y'all stay safe out there...

Saimee

Red face

Guys,

Thanks for sharing and the lessons learnt. I kind of feel better, but I think Mark wouldn't want me to get too comfortable....hahhahhah.....

I have seen some bad accidents while working offshore on the platforms here in Sarawak and evac is always a problem when you are miles away from everything. Haiz, I think I was experiencing "newbie" syndrome; excitable and ignorant.

Cheers...

still remember that faithful day in seletar reservoir, jus before i leave for takabonerate? you were teaching me how to cast when the bail of your safari 5000 slam back in mid cast and the popper dived at me, its treble tearing through my hat, my collar, finally coming to a stop after slamming into my bicep.

kind of freak accident 1) we were standing abt 5 m apart 2) i did not shed even 1 drop of blood.

fishing is so dangerious. i better give up soon.

Hi,

Even the high quality reel like Saltiga 6000GT can not withstand the brutal force of the giant GT so may I know which reel survived throughout the trip ?

Thank You

Hi Eyesore ,

It's concluded that Saltiga's foot broke due to mis-handling , no reports on Stella having problem but a TwinSpin30 handle came loose but repair works were done and the reel become functional again the next day .

No doubt Pat will be trying to buy a new housing assy. for that Saltiga of
his or he will be without reel for awhile , his Stella n TwinSpin30 were stolen when flying aboard Aloha Airline between Honolulu and Kauai . A reminder for
all not to check-in reels or any valuable inside a zipperred luggage , a hard shelled suitcase may fare better but no guaranty at all .

Jon, it is still a shock to me that the foot was broken like that haha. Could the amount of pressure coming from that harness be that great on the foot so much so it was ripe off? lol

Hi Sportfisherman,

Losing stuff while on flights is a bummer. To top it off, insurance coverage isn't going to cover the cost of the Stella and TwinSpin. How did that happen? Was your friend using a TSA-lock on his luggage, or did he leave the bag unlocked?

Khoo

Jon,

That really sucks having stuff stolen out of your luggage. I swear the x-ray guys must be in on it, 'cos they always target the "right" bags. I had a friend whose Samsonite case had its lock picked and her jewelry "extracted" with the case locked back like nothing had happened. Hardcases are no insurance either unless you might use something like a Pelican case with a hardened padlock, but chances are they would take the whole case.

Do you happen to know what kind of harness system they were using with the 6000GT that may have contributed to the breakage of the foot?. Also was the reel running the stock drags?.

Regards,

Saimee

Guys ,

I don't know what type of shoulder harness that Pat used and I don't know the details how that Saltiga foot broke , I think GTFisherman is the right person to ask , he is active in deepjigging forum .

As for losing those reels , Pat did not check in the luggage till he reached
his home soil which is Hawaii , it is an irony thing like that should happened
when one is so close to home already .

Re: Komodo results .

Jon,

I met your Caucasion friend in Bali who fished on your Searcher on the way back to Spore on 11 Nov. The same guy in the first photo.

During our trip, there was one day while we were fishing in Northern part of Komodo, the air is between cool to cold. Water was icy cold. Then suddendly there was 2 meters wall of cold mist (probably due the mixture to the heat of the sun and the icy water) at the surface of the water. Bet you, not a bite in that area.

With regard to Saltiga or Stella, those mishaps are probably due to mishandling or unaware of loose parts. While popping, I felt something wrong about the occalation of my Stella 10k. I soon discovered that the screw at tha bail arm had been loosened by the constant opening and closing of the bail arm. It was subsequently tightened and hence the problem was resolved.

So guys, if you are casting, please take a bit of time preferably daily to check the screw at the bail arm are tight. Preferably applied with "locktight". And also after several cast, make sure your joints of your rod is securely tightened.

Happy casting

Ghani
