| Administrator | Excellent Catch at Tanjung Pinang (Ah Kiang's boat.) Just got back from a Tanjung Pinang Trip (3D,2N) which greatly exceeded our expectations in terms of catch. 5 Anglers: Edy, Henri, Yong, Vincent, Alex Total Catch: estimated 160Kg including: 1 Stingray (13Kg) 1 Stingray (4Kg) 1 Parrot Fish (3.9Kg) 2 Barracuda (3Kg) 1 Bonitto (1KG++ - jigging) 1 Sagai (1KG++ - jigging) 6 Cobias (2Kg-5Kg each) 2 Golden Snappers (3Kg each) 15 Red Snappers (1-2.5Kg each) 10 Trevallies (Silver + Spotted), (1Kg-5Kg each) 5 Diamond Trevallies (1-2Kg each) 10 Kacis (1Kg-3Kg) 10 Sweetlips ??? Emperor Fish ??? (1Kg each) During this trip we had 3 exciting runs: first a Trevally run, followed by a red snapper run and finally a Cobia run. As we arrived in Tanjung Pinang around 12h00 on Thu, we immediately boarded the fishing charter (Captain Ah Kiang) to head towards the Merapas Island fishing grounds. Around 4pm we hit a school of Trevally (Silver, Diamond, spotted) which gave us a very good start. Apollo rig was very effective because of the low current, Trevallies hitting any of the 3 hooks (top, middle, bottom). Some trevallies caught on Lang-gong, Edy managed to land a few while jigging. Perhaps Edy's jigging helped us get all those trevallies near our bottom fishing lines. The snapper run came in the evening around 7-9pm. Fish biting on both Langong and Apollo rigs, on squid. Large majority of fishes hitting the bottom hook, occasionally the middle one. The Cobia Run was in the heart of night fishing at 1-2am when the current finally picked up and large fishes started attacking our baits. 6 cobias were landed within minutes. As it usually happens, once one catches the first Cobia, the other members of the school follow one after the other. Overall the evening/night fishing could be divided into 5 chapters with periods of action and periods of no bites. Chapter 1 (Sunset): 6-9pm good bites of Snappers, a few small Garupas_ Chapter 2: 9pm-1am, no current, very limited action Chapter 3: 1am-3am, large fishes hitting or Langong baits. Vincent landed the 13Kg Stingray, and lost 2 other ones in the 20Kg+ range (line snapped). Chapter 4: 3am-5am, very quite again Chapter 5 (SunRise): 5am-8am big fishes because aggressive again, Alex also snapped the line on another 20Kg+ stingray. Vincent landed the Parrot fish and some sizeable snappers. Edy's sharing scheme was great (each anglers gets to keep the top 2 catches, and shares the rest including stingrays). Fishing still has a big luck component into it and even top anglers can have a day off. Sharing offers a good insurance to everyone, encourages hardwork and team spirit your ice-box is always full at the end of the trip! Being only 5 anglers on the boat came up to be more costly per head but paid off. More attention from the boatmen, more space, more fishes to bring back. Special mention to the boat crew excellent service on board (The Singapore airlines of Charter boats). Always there to help untangle lines, clean the fish Nice to go home with our hands in good conditions (no scratches, wounds from de-hooking fish). Also worth mentioning that some of the fish we brought back was caught by the boat men who generously gave it to us. We definitely look forward to our next trip there. [ THIS TRIP REPORT IS WRITTEN BY ALEX] Edy: I would like to thank everyone for participating on this trip and the positive attitude which we have through out the trip. Thanks, Edy PS. Pictures will be posted soon |
