Catch Report Batam, Horsburg Lighthouse 20/21 May 2006

This was the first time I I fished with this boat at SCS, Horsburgh Lighthouse, about one hour from Brakit. It was an invitation by a friend who had good results before.

The boat named SUSAN, one of 3 boats that the owner has, is a wooden boat, approximatley 50-60 ft in length, with a small air-conditioned cabin that can sleep 5 (including the floor), a bridge that is about 2/3 the size of a 3-room HDB flat, (sleeping room for 5), an aft that can sit 6 anglers comfortably, toilet, cooking facilities and a second deck for chilling out or sleeping.

The boat is very stable, fast, and well maintained.

Besides the chinese skipper, who is the son of the boat's owner, there is a cook, and a deck hand.

Despite the excellent service and hardworking attitude of the skipper and the huge amount of fresh squid caught live in the night, the catch was one of the most disappointing I have ever been to, due to water temperature and wind conditions. It was windy most part of the trip and water temperature was so cold fish wouldn't bite. Not even nibbles.

Besides a 2 kg grouper, every other fish is not worth mentioning.

We are all disppointed but according to the kakis who have fished with this skipper, and his father, past track records were quite excellent.

We are planning another one come July, and hopefully we will able to see better results than this. Although the skipper is still young and only with 3 years experience from taking over his father's boat, I believe that he has great potential. He knows his spots and he knows his waters.

Total damage for the trip is $150 per angler (there were 7 of us), inclusive of transport, ferry tickets, food, beer, ciggerettes, and also a massage before returning to Singapore.

I will post pics of the boat when I get the email from my friend.
Meanwhile, tightlines to all.

Cheers
stryke
