Sultan Shoal Catch Report 22/09/2006 - 24/09/2006

Was invited to sultan shoal for a short holiday over the weekend by my relatives. There were a lot of small fishes all around the island... saw schools of rabbit fishes and half beaks in the day.
In the night, sotongs could be easily spotted off the jetty. Brought my sotong jig, caught 8 pcs on the first night and bbq them the following day...
2nd night decided to target at the larger fishes, used 4/0 hooks and waited at the jetty with my cousin and uncle. At around 1am, my uncle landed a blue spotted stingray... and a while later landed an eel... no actions after that and the wind was blowing so strongly... until around 3am, my rod suddenly bent twice and the line went out, when i reel back the whole kelong sotong with the hook was gone. Ran back to my chalet to get my wire line, attached a 4/0 hook onto the swivel and just tied it back on the leader line. 2nd attempt use small slice of kelong sotong, sudden bent on my rod again after some time. Bait was already gone when i retrieved it back. For the third time, I used the head of the kelong sotong and cast it back to the same spot. 10 mins later, my reel screamed like mad... and after ard 30mins of fight, i landed this 18kg barracuda, really can't believe my luck. Had a hard time bringing the fish out from the water, dragged it all the way from the jetty to the shore with the help of my uncle and cousin by hooking the fish with their fishing line. In the end use plier grab hold of the upper potion of the mouth and dragged it up onto the land.
Enjoy the pics!!!

Dude, nice Catch Report! Lemme give you a tip, if you ever go back to Sultan Shoal Lighthouse again, drift a live bait under a balloon to the area outside your swimming pool. Either that or cast poppers from the jetty and work it over that area. Years ago, we landed many huge barracudas by trolling rapala magnums at Sultan Shoal and the strike was ALWAYS outside the swimming pool
