Jason(working in Hotspot) indeed is one of those very lucky kurau angler. There were 2 trips whereby he's the only angler to land kurau among 6 anglers onboard. Btw, he'd been on my charter targetting only kurau at least once a month since last year Oct. Have to say he's the most hardworking chap onboard & has no hesitation fishing up to 2Kg sinker whereby majority had given up on the waiting game. Quote:
Pics with dark background & last pic with big ang cho(10 lbs) are from night trip. The rest are from day trips. Best regards Yew Seng

I have been trying to get some big sinkers around 2kg size but so far the biggest I can find is size 24. Would you know which shop sells really big sinkers? Prefer using 1 pc rather than grouping. Thanks, Mark PS. Looking forward to my trip on 30/4

Upon request from kurau anglers, Siow Chang had started manufacturing sinker >1Kg. Available in 1.3 & 1.8 Kg only. Last I know of, besides Siow Chang, Hotspot have them but price is rather ex due to huge increase in commodity prices. Had bought some 1.3 Kg sinker at $6+/pc Previously, I buy lead from scrap cable collectors to make my own big sinkers. Used to cost $0.40/Kg but price had shot up to $1.40/Kg now. BR Yew Seng

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | I Love Kurau .... Brother Yew Seng, You r very good ah! Understand the Kurau spot at St. John have been censor by PCG. Have the situation improve ? Got news, the ferries captain always blow their horns, may be it lead to the Kurau's spot censorships. |

Looking forward to have you onboard soon. Female anglers are welcome onboard. P.S. - Anglers age <18 must be accompanied by parent/adult angler. Quote:

Prior to year 2004, senior anglers told me that kurau season is usually around year end NE monsoon period. However, year 2004 had proven otherwise. Season for last year started as early as June/July & lasted till abt mid Nov. Never in history that Singapore had ever produce such a bumper crop of kurau. A conservative estimate for total amount of kurau landed by both anglers/netters for year 2004 is easily 3 tons (yes 3000 Kg !!!). Just when anglers thought the season is over, 2nd & subsequent run occur. On a side note, kurau with its bottom feelers apparently seem to be good predictors for progressive & drastic earth movement leading to a major earthquake. Whenever kurau bite rate suddenly turns hot, few days/weeks later, it will be followed up by a severe earthquake off sumatra. This unique scenario happens for both major quake off sumatra on 26 Dec 2004 & 28 mar 2005. For the 2nd run, there were major tremors reported few days later. In the early fishing days, fishmonger will say that major kurau source are from Tj. Balai(Batam), Karimun & Pulau Pisang. With this sudden turn of events, I'm not surprised that Singapore 2004 bumper crop of kurau are the whole stock from places mentioned. Fish with its natural instinct probably know places which offer better shelter. If that's being the case, very few or even zero kurau are landed from Balai, Karimun & Pisang for last year's season. Ironically, Batam(Balai) commercial drift fishing fishermen are fishing very near or inside our territorial waters since last year. Sad to say, I believe majority of the kurau mamas(>10Kg) have been hauled up by our East Coast netters. To my knowledge, only 2 kurau >10Kg were landed by rod/reel angler. All this reminds me of the great jewfish run(some almost tipping the 20Kg mark !!!) at P. Lima for year 2002. When Penggerang netters came to know about it, hundreds of them were hauled up by netters within a single tide. Subsequent year onwards, landing rate for jewfish drop drastically at Lima & HB vicinity. Nobody will know when is the next kurau run but chance of landing a mama kurau >10Kg(my personal local dream catch) seem more remote now. As to fishing for kurau, it's not suitable for every angler. Using very heavy weights(1 to 2.5 Kg) is the norm as the spot is a bottleneck within a main current channel. Anglers will need heavy tackle set (min #50 set). Using braid(recommend #50) as mainline is absolutely necessary. When all these are no deterrent, feel free to give me a call or drop me a PM to check out on its latest status. From my observation, kurau seem to be great producers whole year round (eat, sleep & ) & their growth rate is rather fast. They literally survive in any water condition & feed on anything that comes along even during raging current. Let's hope that they manage to survive & breed for the next season. However, I personally would not want to see another major earthquake off sumatra should the next kurau run happen.BR Yew Seng
