A Salty Tale

Was fishing Jurong Island yesterday and scored a few hits on my Salty Rubber again. The first fish landed was a decent kilo plus Grouper 30 mins after setting sail. Not a bad start! Anyway things were going pretty well for me up to noon when the winds totally died off and currents were at a stand-still. The next 4-5 hours was truly agonizing! No bites, no wind (= boat not drifting) and blazing hot sun At about 4.40pm, I decided to cast out my Salty Rubber and bounce it back to the boat. On my third or fourth cast something grabbed the Salty Rubber and my Majorstick 70X doubled over. My line went tight, and started peeling off my reel almost immediately after I felt the hit. Sadly I didn't stay connected to the fish for long and the fish threw the hook after 10 seconds or so. Well, I guess its these incidents that keep you going back for more!

These are the species that have fallen for mySalty Rubber so far-
ACK
Grouper
Johnson (Hey anyone know whats the real name for this?)
Parrot
Octopus

Disclaimer- The smaller ACK was caught on Salty Rubber. As my buddy Strikes was helping me with the landing net, his own bait got nailed by the bigger ACK shown in the same photo

Bro whats the weight of your salty rubber? I tried using 20gm jig at 1 of the islands there only awarded with a arumugam. Good catch.

The head is made of lead and the rest are rubber strips.

I was using a 80g model Sharky. I found out that having slightly lighter models in your tackle box is useful for days when there's no current and no wind to make your boat drift around. You can cast the salty rubber out and bounce it back across the bottom. Casting my 80g model on a bc outfit is pretty risky (for your rod )

Shawn the Salty Rubber is more or less just a decorated lead head with a vinyl skirt + assist hook attached. Devis was on the boat with me that day and saw first hand how easy it is to use the salty rubber.

Re: A Salty Tale

Hi Stickbom

I bought a few salty rubber also. Intended to use it in Pekan.
Understand that the assist hooks r attached to an unclosed
eye. Do u think the eye can withstand the pull if a good size
fish is connected.

Re: A Salty Tale

Hi MD06, till date I haven't landed anything significantly big enough to tell you if the hardware is going to hold but someone else here has tried them on big eye trevally and did not mention anything about the open tow eye giving way. Also, these lures are meant to work with light lines/leaders so I doubt anything will give way. I'll try to dangle a 10kg sack of rice on my Salty Rubber the next time I stock up my kitchen (wife seldom cooks so 5kg sack of rice lasts us forever! ) Oh the one thing that you REALLY need to change is the hook! If you're lazy to tie your own hooks just buy that pre-rigged owner assist hook (choose the one with a shortest possible dyneema cord attached and size 2/O hooks)

Mikey,

So you were using it like a hk hook? cast, hit bottom, bounce back all the way to the boat?

Re: A Salty Tale

i did change the hooks to decoy hairtail series..the original hooks are too brittle..i dont think the hooks will come off easliy...its been sercure by a rubber tubing..the angle wont allow it to come off...

Sebby I only tried the cast/bounce thing during the last hour of my trip. Was worried the lure might snag on the bottom so most of the time I just dropped the lure over the sides & bounced it gently on the bottom when our boat was drifting at a constant pace.

Thanks hdmcgatha guess I was either 2xs lucky or the lure really works great on our local species!

Stickbom, what i did was cast out and jig lightly with slow retrieving once touches the sea bed, afraid the lure might get snag too, quite ex...haha.
I got a big hit while almost reaching surface and could be a big gull fish by looking at the shape of the body. Going to try again on my next trip. pretty shiok.

Its good to have various sizes in the tackle box. Try the 20gm bronze color salty...pretty good.

Lucky I got witness who saw me catching fish with the Salty Rubber... otherwise when people start grabbing these lures by the dozens and don't catch fish... I'm going to become Ali Ba Ba King

Re: A Salty Tale

yeah man! you should have grabbed some of the other madai jigs available there. Here limited choice Actually madai jigs should work pretty well here cos many of the fishes caught off Jurong Island tend to throw up half digested octopus/squid after we landed them!
