Morning Glory

Did another overnight trip on the last day of September. Highlight of the trip was three BIG bust-offs -- one leader worn through, one leader cut-off by structure even at close to full drag, one mainline burst with rod still in the rodholder. For the last bust-off, angler was kicking himself because he forgot to reset his drag after locking it down to free a snag!!!!!

The final hour of fishing at dawn produced 7 angchos, with 3 of them the largest of this eventful trip. Was pretty sure we would have caught more angchos if we were not too pre-occupied with sitting at the spot that busted us off three times, awaiting to dish out some payback, before moving to the final spot !!!

Hey there Makaira, great catch report. I'm wondering if the bust-offs could've been large groupers.

Thanks guys.

Alan ..... those angcho not big enough for fishhead curry lar

Rascal .... for sure, possibly all three of them were big mama groupers ....... but to soothe the pain ..... roti prata lah!!!!!

Mikey .... Baja special ..... Prata Special ..... Fried Rice special .... simi "Special" oso no use Just one of those situations where the fish won

Edy, I don't remember ever bleeding a ray, but I am sure it wouldn't hurt. For rays, IMHO, I think the most important thing is to ice it down real quick and to scrape off the slime to maintain good eating quality.

Hahaha I know what you mean. Well, just in case people start accusing me of being kiasu or mad for bringing the 113HN to a local trip, I can tell them Makaira and Co. had 3 big bust offs.

Yo Mikey ........... No need to worry or pay attention to what others may say, think or talk about what tackle you use for whatever "genre" of fishing Me & my regular kakis go local fishing with 665N loaded with 65# braided & full battle ready Calstars or GUSAs if the spot calls for it, light baitcasting outfits for other spots. IMHO, the key is use the right tackle for the job at hand.

People can say what they want ...... who cares, as long as you enjoy the fishing As far as I am concerned, "overkill" is a matter of opinion; and as we all know, opinions differ

Woah KK,

Ahhhh I am glad to see that the Force is still with you my master... .... absolutely great catch dude.... what were your setups on the rigs that got busted off?....

As for Mikey and his Baja fixation, truth is that he is just dying to try out a new reel.... plain and simple... . Anyway, since I am probably partially responsible for Mikeys return to the "overkill" darkside, I wish him the best of luck and hope the reel is a "lucky" one. Mikey what rod are you using with your new Prata Killer?.

I , or the spot, can rest when I am dead dude By the time you have time off your super busy schedule to hit the spot, the season is over and we'll have to wait another year. Anyways, you are adverse to overnight fishing to begin with Not a matter of greed lah As you well know, it is simply a matter doing your homework -- being aware of your past catches, monitor the conditions (tides & currents), getting it right and striking while the iron is hot. Time & tide waits for no man May the conference table-sized pratas bless your two-speed Avets & Penns

Saimee ....... we were using ranggong rigs with the appropriate leader length as dictated by current strength & depth. Leader poundage was at least 50# or so. We don't go much higher than that. You know how painful it can be if you get snagged with super duper heavy trace.

Mikey ....... who says a Penn 113 is overkill .... look at what my good friend is using........ Make my Accurate 665 look like a pea shooter.

Mak,

Hehehehehehehe.... boy can you rub it in harder????......

Aiyah, worst case scenario, switch to ye olde faithful standby... Mr 200lb Handline...wahahahahahahahaha... As for snagging up on 80lb+ leader, there is a Captains saying on the boat....

"Sangkut? No problem, have engine mah...."

Keep up the great catches dude.... my Crew and I are suffering a severe case of Typhoonitis at the moment .... no antibiotics available and Panadol doesn't seem to help much ..... its enough to make you wanna just or someone....

Regards,

Saimee

Hijacking Mak's Catch Report but here are some reports from friends who fished Anthony & Ah Cheng over the weekend, Ang Chors many:

Ah Cheng (local southern islands):

7 x Ang Chor 2kg-3kg size
1 x grouper
1 x blue spot stingray
A few kaci

Anthony:

15 x Ang Chor around 2kg size
1 x big Gao 8kg

Very bad weather out at HB, storm conditions

PS. Jason says he got 40 medium Ang Chors with Kee Siong (post Catch Report leh!)

Fantastic catches prevail for our local waters!!! Fantastic!!! No need to trouble with port clearance & ICQ procedures, get rocked & rolled black & blue to get a decent catch.

Looking at the current conditions, with the constantly shifting prevailing winds, my main concern is that the NE monsoon will set in very early this year. Saimee-san ....... what you think??

Ahhhh KK-san, me thinks that the NE Monsoon is right now in the process of parallel parking into the South China Sea slot, so it has already arrived...

My main worry is whether it comes early and leaves early (i.e. I get to fish by the end of the year ) or whether it comes in early, finds a good party and some wild chicks and then decides to stay to hang out and do some groupies till March next year.... in which case , I will start unlimbering my surf rods....

Saimee

Hi Siamee & KK

He who bring the biggest gun/rod comes back with the biggie. Mak only got a 12Kg one so far, only 18kg and above counts in that joint. That why must BIG GUNS, 12/0 hook, 100pd leader. Struck, start engine!

Sure hope the Monsoon don't start so soon this year saimee. If it does come over here and KK will bring you to sinful dark place to drown your sorrows, pity i can't go with you 2. The smoke will probably kill me.
