Bluewater Fishing Expedition

Just got back from a 1d1n local water trip. catch rate is bad in terms of quantity but it is one of the best local trip i had ever been on. i finally caught a decent sized grouper(8kg) after fishing for 6 years!
Significant Catch:

Groupers x 3 (800gms, 8kg, 20kg)
Jewfish (14kg)
Chermins x2 (1kg)
Ang Cho x 5 (500gm - 1.5kg)
Orh Kaci (1kg)
Kaci (3kg)
Stingray x2 (500gm, 1kg)

Calvin, that's a good catch on local waters. Look like you're on board Nelayana and I presumed you were at the same spot as the last bugger you caught. Good work.

Hi Edros, it is indeed the same spot as last time. Vincent, next time i'll ask you along. DaFrogman, the 20kg grouper was caught by Preston on a seed PE6 with saltiga z40(the bend of the rod was terrifying, unfortunately our cameraman was asleep or else would have been able to show you guys the fighting process).
we would not have caught the groupers if not for something Goldensniper said of some boatman using certain bait and caught a 14kg grouper. after hearing him said that, i tried the bait and got a bite within 5mins but unfortunately the fish took the bait and throw the hook (mustad sz 11 demon hook). the boatman, Ricky, told me to use gang hook so i attached another sz 7/0 to the existing rig and drop down using the same type of bait and within 10mins the bait was taken but this time i won the fight. the 20kg grouper was caught around 2hours later and the fun started when the leader snap as the fish is brought up. as we were cursing and swearing about losing the fish, i saw the grouper float up by itself and started floating away! we quickly shouted for Ricky to reverse the boat and luckily we managed to get the fish before the current drift it to Ah Jiang boat.
the jewfish was caught in the morning by Goldensniper using prawn balls at the same spot(ask him how he hook the bait as i was sleeping at that time).
we wouldn't have such a great trip if not for the excellent parking skill and hard work of Ricky of Nelayana. when he say we are beside the wreck, it is really just meters from the wreck (we knew it as when the wind shifted the boat, all of us caught the wreck!).
fyi, i may be planning another trip with the boat in Jan depending on the boat schedule. slots will be open to those who had fished with me before and limit to 10.
stickbom!, tell Ricky to bring you to catch bait first thing tomorrow, just tell him to fish for the grouper bait. i think it is harder for him to find spot to fish the bait then fish for ang cho.

Fantastic catch for local waters

A jew fish >10Kg is one of the species that I was hoping to land during my charter days but was unsuccessful. My last encounter was year 2004 whereby we got 3 strong take that all got busted. Another boat which was beside us then landed one jew abt 14 Kg successfully.

Congrats to Calvin/Daryl & also to the angler who had landed the biggest grouper

Hi Yew Seng, the groupers wouldn't be caught if not for you. Daryl mentioned that you told him you caught a 14kg grouper using a certain kind of bait which we accidentally had fished up and intended to release so i took his suggestion and used that bait. I think for my next trip out with them, i'll request that we search for that bait before target other fish.

Was the bait Kelong Chi? I know that it works somehow for grouper ... another good bait is teebon.

Of course if crazy enough a 500grams to 1 kilo snapper is a good choice too.

Wow!!!!! Looks like the biggies are still around. Time to hit the local waters again for some decent action. To think that I wasted 10 days in the Maldives when fishing is so hot locally!!!!!
