My Mood:  Rep Power: 6  | If only we had better bait Was inivited to fish with Mack, Alvin & Henry Koh at the Southern Islands over the weekend. Fished mostly Jurong Island vicinity at night while trying to scoop squid...only managed to net 4 pc  As predicted, the night bite was slow and sea state was choppy with strong winds in the evening. The day bite was good. Most of the better fish including the ang chors and the jew fish were landed in the day. In general, the overall bite was slow compared to Alvin's previous trip with this boatman where they landed close to 30pc ACK. Could be due to the lack of fresh quality bait I believe. The captain did prepare some frozen squid and some garfish for us as back up but most of the quality fish landed on our trip were taken on tiny fresh squid strips and the Jew fish taken on the solitary live fish bait. The highlight of the trip was a 11-13lb Jew Fish  All the Ungahs over 1kg. Big Talang and Malong and some nice grunters.Will bring my own supply of bait including fresh squid, live fish or octopus if available for future trips with this Captain. This Captains thinks BIG BIG fish all the time! Like his style  The bottle in the picture is 1.5L capacity. Great trip with new mates tight lines Last edited by MarkR : 07-05-2007 at 02:15 PM. |

As the boatman is confident that we can catch squid in sultan shoal hence i did not prepare the spare kelong squid. Anyway after this trip, we know what to expect when fishing with this boatman. Buy some live prawn and milkfish on the june, july, august and oct trip. The boat fee was well spent as we fish from 7pm (sat) till 3pm (sun). Though the night current was strong, the day current is perfect for fishing in the deep water off st. John. We did try fishing for kurau but the fish did not co-operate. Hopefully better luck for the next time round. cheers |

Rep Power: 5 | Re: If only we had better bait Great catch guys!!!!! As we are all too aware, the quality of bait pretty much dictates the quality of catch in local water 99% of the time. Just be prepared & take the extra effort to get the best bait you can & if the conditions are right, JACKPOT!!!!! Being able to catch live squids in our waters is never a guarantee. The number of times I've experienced the "here today & gone tomorrow" syndrome is uncountable so I always bring kelong squid or whatever back-up baits available with me. Any left over kelong squid will become sambal sotong for lunch or dinner the next day. YUMMY!!!!! |
