My Mood: Rep Power: 6 ![]() ![]() | A Golden Weekend Quick check with the tide charts revealed a nice night current on friday, so I promptly called one of the top local Ungah captains for a booking Turned out to be an awesome trip...41 Ungahs and other collateral catches for just one night's fishing in local waters...lots of squid netted...non-stop bites at all of the 3 spots, simply amazing! Ungahs ranged from around 1kg to 2.5kg size....Total about 50 pc assorted...and a lot of misses...some kakis lost a good grouper (approx 3-4kg) and a good Ungah at boatside while trying to flip them on board Last edited by MarkR : 28-05-2007 at 01:53 PM. |

My Mood: Rep Power: 6 ![]() ![]() | Re: A Golden Weekend Thanks guys. It was an excellent trip with very seasoned kakis...Frank7, Mack, Francis...the sort that "don't give chance", "one sotong, one kill" type What was interesting was that while we were waiting for one of the gang to arrive, the skipper already raring to go called up one of his personal kakis to take a cab down asap...once this happened I knew sure lok chiak tonight Last edited by MarkR : 28-05-2007 at 11:33 AM. |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Re: A Golden Weekend Friday's trip started off with me turning up late due to work commitment. As a result, boatman called his own kaki to come to fish. Once out in the open sea, we are please to see that the sea was calm and the moon was small.. All the while, Mark was very optimistic, hoping that we have a good trip. Well, local trip's result depends on the availability of live squid and favorable current flow. Really appreciate Mark's effort to buy kelong squid from his source. After traveling for a considerable amount of time, the boat finally come to a stop. As we are near some island, boatman mentioned that we are here to scoop squid but the 4 of us started fishing. Using kelong squid on my double hook, I have a cut off, presumably from a barracuda. Next, Francis caught a 1.5kg angcho which put up a reasonable amount of fight on his cutlass and Trinidad. Frank, boatman, anchorman and myself brought up several angcho in this spot. We also caught about 30-40 squid and 10 fishes in this area. Mark was kind of pressurized as he has not break the egg yet. After the bite slowed down at 10pm, boatman changed to the 2nd spot which is 10 mins away. He warn us that the spot is muddy and we may expect some rote prata (stingray) here. No worries as we are gear up with some serious fishing tackles here. Within 5 mins, myself and mark caught a angkui each. Many a times, we can see Frank running to his rod after his rod tip dip a bit. He would crank the reel with the rod on the holder and within seconds an Angcho will appear on the water surfaces. In the end, I follow frank's style of fishing, lazily reel up the fishes with the rod on the holder. Highlight of this spot is both Frances and mark's rod dipped with 2 different fishes at the same time. Francis managed to pulled up his catch which was a 4kg grouper but mark's fish went into the coral. However, we are fated not to land the grouper as the deckman lifted up the grouper using the leader line instead of scooping it using a net. The leader broke and the grouper waved goodbye to us. I lost a reasonable sized fish here too which managed to pulled out some line from my Kaikon 4000 with 80lbs powerpro when my dupoint 40lbs leader broke. After losing this fish, I immediately changed to dupoint 60lbs leader. Overall, we landed close to 20 fishes from this second spot. Around 3am, we moved to our 3rd and last spot. It was intense fishing for the first 30mins. It was almost a one angcho landed every 3mins. After the frenzy ended, we are still bring up fishes once in a while and landed several table size grouper too. We must be fishing near some wreck cos we always get struck to the seabed. Toward day break, frank hooked a 15cm squid and lower into the deep water, hoping to catch a big grouper. After 30mins, his rod dipped and he raced to crank his reel. The grouper did not turn up but an angcho appeared at the end of the line. We landed close to 20 fishes here. This trip ended with frank catching the most fishes. There were squids surfacing and lots of action throughout the nite so there is never a dull moment. Some photo taking session was conducted while we are on our way back. Total catch, 41 angcho, 2 angkuei, 1 keefish, 1 nurse shark and 4 groupers Saturday trip was a local night fishing trip. I called the boatman on Saturday morning and he told me that he landed close to 30 fishes with about 20 angcho and a 8kg grouper on Friday nite. Myself, mark and nelson started out with high expectation. We started out going to catch squid first. With 10+ squid in the box, we proceed to our first spot. The boatman landed an angcho within mins of anchoring but after that nothing came up. Nelson landed a guhood at the second spot. Towards midnight, we landed 5 angcho in one spot with myself losing a 2kg angcho when the hook came out of the fish's mouth when the boatman lift it onto the boat. After that, the bite rate was very slow but we managed to land 2 coral rays and one last angcho. We conclude the trip with 7 angcho, 1 guhood and 2 coral ray. cheers |

Talking about kee siong trip, edwin just emailed me my photos for the may 12 - 13 trip. Caught this 1.1m cobia which max-out the 30lbs boga. It was caught on my extreme catapult 3 with conquest 800 and 30lbs powerpro. It took 25mins to land this huge fellow. It is a pity that u gave up your slot to me. By the way, nara has a few more slot for the june 16-17 trip, u interested to join? |

thanks for the nice report, but on the next day (Saturday) the same captain with different group brought back more than 10 pcs of AC as he commented that this group did not perform the usual stuff like us whom check our bait constantly and also the missing luck factor of Frank7. My suggestion is to ask the captain to bring the deckie down for your next trip as he can help the group catch squid, unhook fish and also pulling up of anchor. This is one of the productive trip which I had missed for a long time but yet still more to be learn from the loss of 2 groupers which bites at almost the same time, the high hitting rate of thick 80 lbs FC versus 40 lbs FC. Overall, superb trip with nice kakis whom know their stuff well. Tight Lines | |
