Baiters won Salty Rubberers by >10:3

*sigh* the baiters on my boat today were too skillful! Despite lousy drift + strong currents + rain + opposing current/wind... they still managed to get more than 10 pieces of assorted fishes like parrots/ groupers/ johnsons/ pisang etc.

The highlight of our trip was when Layman boated a 6lb+ Grouper on his pink head SR. Ophio also got a Grouper on his copper head SR but his fish had very nice colors! (see image below). My only catch of the day was a small Grouper (black head SR) and it was normal looking so didn't bother to take photo Touch wood but my SR has never gone fishless so far... hope my luck holds up! Lets see if I manage to get myself a big one on the 13th of this month

When I grow up I want to be like Stickbom! Hold all the skills, patience, and stamina in the world to catch something in local waters without bait. The only thing I caught using a jig/lure/or whatever chim chim names you people gives to fish attracting devices with hook(s) in local water is sangkut.

We seriously need more anglers like Stickbom to bring fishing up to the atas level. Till then, we can only stare at those golfers enviously for the free extra baggage limit they enjoy for golf clubs at check in counter, while we pay through our eyes, ears, noses, mouths, and arse holes for our rod tubes, jigs, bags, and ice boxes.

Kudos to Stickbom for making fishing this sport more sporting.

Hey, those delicious green eyes are getting bigger at Jurong Island, and is that Ho Hong holding the big fish? And is it Ah Cheng's style of drift fishing more appropriate for the SR jigs, and may not be effective on a boat that is properly anchored.

As for the SR’s replacement skirts, don’t have to go to JB to get them … found them in Coho, selling at $5 for 5 pcs/pack. Bought them as I was indeed spurred by Mak’s tale of a Yellowfin’s catch on a Storm Rubber, so out of sheer movtivation, with Rosco heavy duty 50 lbs split ring and Owner Stinger Treble hooks, crafted this genetically modified alien called - Fishoctopus. LOL... guys... that's waaaaaay too much credit for a lazy bloke like me.

LBT- The real unsung heroes are those who risk fines and probably even a jail sentence to go poaching at prohibited areas man (not that I'm encouraging it but it takes guts to pursue their passion at such high risks). I'm just a lazy bum who happen to come across a very well designed lure which appeals to our local fish species.

Richard- Seriously we got thrashed >10:3 today. No kidding man. We lurers only landed one fish each. As long as you're fishing on a drifting boat, I'm sure the SR will work (there must be fish there in the first place lar...) LOL, I like the SALTIER RUBBER image!! By the way I think it might be cheaper to order the replacement skirts from USA.

Out of curiosity dude, can the SRs be worked effectively from an anchored boat? Can they be worked like normal metal jigs too?

I got some questions on how to use this SR.

My SR's paint is badly peeled after just 1 hour of bumping the bottom. When you drift fish the SR, how often do you bump it to the bottom? Should you hit the bottom on every jig? or do you lower it to about 1 ft above the bed and jig it up and down. How high up do you jig it to? Just 1 rod's length, or reel it up and lower it again?

Also, how fast do you jig it? I jig it like for tamban. Is that too fast?

Great effort dude.... How deep are those waters you are fishing?....

It is pretty impressive to see that even under not so ideal conditions and with bait in the water, fish will still hammer the artificials. My regards to Gazza too on his maiden SR catch. Keep it up dude and I may have to follow Richards path to make up and test a heavier duty deep water version of the SR.

What kind of tackle do you think would work in 200ft of water fishing a heavier and bigger version of the SR?.

hi Richard yeap its me... LOL.. Saltier Rubber aka GM Fishoctopus... sound and looks great! will rig up some and give it a try if I get the chance. Guess salty works better while drifting as we are covering more ground. But if there is a favourable current while anchored, I will be v tempted to try out as well

lawrence, I usually lift the salty about a feet off the bottom and let it back down hitting the bottom, very slowly though.

mike, revenge will be "sweet" though my 2/0 owner straightened slightly as well. Was browsing cabela, but they didnt seem to have any white with red spotted skirts like the original that comes with it. might check out coho this weekend.

MarkR, I have never tried the SR from a stationary boat but I guess it'll work if there's a lot of fishes at the spot you're anchored at. I dun move the SR at all... just a few inches off the bottom and tapping the bottom every now and then to see if I need to release more line. I have a feeling Groupers are lazy buggers (like me) so the SR need to whisk past their noses in order to get their attention.

DFM- We're in about 20-30m of water at most. You need to write in to Duel and ask them to make a 200g DFM SPECIAL if you're going to fish at 200' feet with the type of gear on your boat (tadpole class rods strictly prohibited on the INTAN !) We're using small Calcutta 200s/Millionaire 200s paired to heavy bass rods.

Layman, I think any color will work... so far nearly every color got whacked! I might be getting some from Cabelas. Much cheaper!

LLCC- Don't worry about the paint work. Fish will still bite your SR even if every bit of paint is gone. I believe fish mistaken the SR for octopus based on its profile and not the color scheme. Our waters are very murky so I doubt the fish can see color at 30m

Ya ,I guess the wearing of the paint job is ok .It should work fine still .Richard although the rubber of yours looks abit funny ,like kinda some worms or parasites are sticking out from the stomache of the fish .But hey ,if it does really works I work happily try it

When in Osaka in March, I spoke to many of the booths selling SR about how they work the lure. Unaminously all said to slowly wind the lure from the bottom through the water column. There was no jigging of the rod nor variable winding rates, just a slow boring wind up.

Damned if I know what the fish think of it but it seems to work quite well. But $20 each?? You could also buy tungsten head models for over $30.

Chris you don't even need to wind them here Just dangle it over the sea bed and fish will hit it. SR only cost about SGD$15 here... relatively affordable compared to designer jigs no?

Honestly by looking at the design of the SR, I think they could be easily home-made, provided we have the time at much lesser cost. My manufacturing procedures would be:

1. Firstly, place some 100gm round sinkers on a busy road and get some trucks to run over them; such that the distortions obtained will achieve an octopus look. (cost S$0.50+free pounding energy)
2. Drill a small hole for a gage 16 SS wire to pass through. (S$0.10)
3. Paint the sinker with undercoat. (S$0.30)
4. Create two eyelets on the inserted SS wire with plastic balls to hold the skirt. (S$0.40)
5. Doll up it up like Marilyn Monroe etc. with cosmetic and eyeball stickers. (S$0.50)
6. Put on the skirt with a small O-ring from hardware shop, and ready to hook-up. (S$1.10)

Estimated cost price is roughly less than S$3, however, inclusive of labor cost could still end up more expensive than buying from the shop.
