Ah Cheng 08/11/07

Its been several months since I've gone fishing with Ah Cheng so during the recent Deepavali hols I decided to gather a bunch of kakis for a trip to the waters off Jurong Island. The day started off pretty slow, with a slight drizzle and overcast skies. Even Ah Cheng said it was going to be a tough day Despite the discouraging "forecast" I still went ahead and attached a Salty Rubber to the end of my line. At about 8-9am, I felt a tell-tale tap at my Salty Rubber and lifted my rod tip to feel if it was a fish or just my lure scraping against a piece of coral. Next thing I knew, all hell broke loose! My rod doubled over and something big was struggling really hard at the end of my line. The fish didn't just head shake but tried to swim off in various directions. It took a while for me to steer the fish back and gain line on it. With 20m more of line to go... everything went slack. The fish managed to throw the hook I really couldn't believe my bad luck at the moment but later I figured it was because when the fish struck, my lure was actually under the boat at an awkward angle. So there wasn't enough force to drive the hooks into the fish's jaw. To make things worse, in the confusion I actually forgot to set the hook by giving it a few hard strikes Anyway, the fish won this time...

Later in the afternoon, despite heavy currents I still managed to hook AND LAND a 4lb+ Grouper. Amazingly, the 4lb'er didn't put up half the fight as the one that got away in the morning and till this very moment, as I'm typing this Catch Report, it makes me wonder what on earth did I hook in the morning and how big it actually was Before the day ended my Salty Rubber caught me a smaller Grouper around the 2lb+ range.

Two other chaps caught their first offshore fish on lure the same day . My buddy Jordan had a lousy morning but things took a big turn for the better when a 6lb+ Parrot fish pounced on his Angler's Pal Salty Rubber lookalike. I can't speak for everyone but I was very impressed with Jordan's magnificent catch that day and it has given me even more faith in madai jig style lures. The other chap, Ephraim, who bought his madai jig the very morning when we had breakfast at Changi landed an estimated 3lb+ grouper in the late afternoon. Ephraim had previously tried using spoons but didn't catch anything with it. He admitted that lures wasn't the "in thing" for him... until his Anglers Pal SR lookalike caught him the handsome Grouper.

Almost everyone caught something that day, either on bait or lure. For a day which started off so gloomy, it sure worked out and ended pretty good!

Hi Mikey,

It seems like you have resurrected and your Madai Strikes Back again.

Good catch.

Catch up with you some other day.
