31/01/2004 Southern Island Nite Trip Catch Report

Beautiful weather after so many days of rain. Decided to go offshore with Edy, Chris and favourite boatman Ah Eng. His boat is slow but who cares, as long can get fish OK liao

Met up with Edy and Chris to get baits(live prawns & kelong squid), food ice & etc.... Left jetty @ 4pm, reached 1st spot at 5pm. No bites After about 1 hour shifted to 2nd spot. Edy got his first fish, a 1kg "teboon"(snapper family). Super lots of kelong chi after that. Steal our bait till we surrender. We caught 3 kelong chi there.

Whole nite super quiet, at 2am at another spot, Edy caught a deepsea kim(sea bass) abt 700g. Quiet after that....

Everyone was tired and kind of asleep until about 6am when Ah Eng's rod bent, line kept going out from his reel. He thought it's a stingray. After a good 5 minutes, we saw the fish. A good 6 kg Snapper on the scale. Solid, everyone on the alert after that.

Waited for another 30 minutes, at the very last minute before returning to the jetty i got another 1kg snapper. That ends the trip...

Anyone interested in hiring the boatman can pm me. Usually the catch is better. Hardworking and friendly too. His boat can take about 4-5 anglers.

My very much-anticipated fishing trip was final here. A fishing expedition with Uncle Eng organized by my newfound good friend Adrian. Uncle Eng might not be well known among Singapore saltwater anglers, but he never failed to impress Adrian on every single trips.

We The Three Amigos [namely: Adrain, Edy, and Chris] met up at a live seafood store to purchase our “sacrifices” [live prawns and cuttlefish] for the trip, before proceeding for our final purchases of ice blocks, food and beverage for the trip.

The Arrival

We arrived at the makeshift marina at late noon where we were greeted by nice weather and beautiful seawater. We met up with our Captain Uncle Eng to unload our stuff, all ready for the long awaited battle. At 4pm our boat Captain ignited the boat engine to officially flag off his much anticipated fishing trip.

The Battle Begins

After an one hour cruise along Jurong port district, we arrived at our first fishing spot. This is where a newbie in fishing like me gets the first hand experience of what is known as “underwater kite flying”. The strong current took our size 12 sinker like a piece of feather. After losing a great deal of our precious live prawn to god know what sea creatures under the sea, Captain Uncle Eng suggested that we anchored and tried our luck at his hot spot for “Ang Chor”. We didn’t catch our targeted species but was rewarded instead with Edy’s “teeboon” and a few “Kelong Chi”were caught, seemingly to console us.

By dinner time the cold wind had started to build up. Our Captain moved towards the in port area and anchored near a wrack. Yet again our baits were warmly greeted by nothing sizable but tiny little sea creatures that seems to have a party of their own by constantly tapping and “stealing” our baits.

Captain Uncle Eng, sense our disappointment and decided make yet another change of spot, this time to the vicinity of Raffles Lighthouse. His effort paid off with Edy bringing up a beautiful deep sea bass.

Near the break of dawn, we headed back to Captain Uncle Eng’s hot spot once again. By then, the stress on us was building up fast, as we still had nothing sizable to show. At this moment, the Captain’s rod bended slightly signaled a gentle take followed by a pause, and thereafter, a continuous shriek of the reel alarm giving out heavenly music. The entire crew came alive with speculation of what type of huge sea creature it might be at the other end of the fishing line. After a good 6 to 8 minutes of tough struggling, the fish rose from the sea, shaking its head and body vigorously trying to free itself from the hook – a 6.5kg “Ang Chor”.

All our confidence was restored, our spirits were high and smiles were seen back on everyone’s face. More bait was drifted out but there were no more takers, until our Captain decided to ask us to reel up for the return journey. At the final moment, Adrian feel some creature inspecting his bait on the other end, his experience tells him that this is a sea creature worth waiting for. Adrian requested for a slight extension of time, and he was rewarded with a good size snapper. Back on shore, we unloaded and received many envious stare from other fisherman at our prized catch.
