Smile 14 Oct local nite Catch Report

Got an invitation to a friend's boat who have given up local fishing for some time. Total 3 anglers (incl owner) for the trip. Appointed time was 2230 hrs as 1 of the kaki usually ends his work late.

I was the earliest to arrive & noticed E/SE wind was blowing (est 8-9 knots) & haze. Visibility est to be abt 2NM. Everyone reached boat berth at abt 2300 hrs. Predicted tidal streams was still pretty strong & coupled with strong opposing wind as well as haze, there's no real hurry to head out to sea to get Rock & Roll exercise.

Then I suggested having a cup of hot coffee before heading out. One of the kaki happened to bring along a VCD on YellowFin Tuna fishing onboard Royal Polaris. 3 of us were enjoying our nice hot coffee & some interesting YFT scenes. Finally, we headed out ard midnite.

1st spot was a shallow reef & only produced 2 small ang cho.

Current starts slacking ard 0300 hrs & no other fish was biting. We then headed towards a deeper spot. Current was almost standstill upon reaching & live squid starts appearing. However, consistent waves pounding from strong SE wind is not conducive for netting live squid.

Re-anchored for current change. Manage to net total abt 20 pcs of live squid. Noticed lots of jellyfish passing thru after current change. In my mind, I was hoping it's not 1 of those days where jellyfish rules the trip.

Winds slackens slightly to abt 3-4 knots ard 0530 hrs.

Fortunately, despite lots of jellyfish ard, fishes started biting again but only when current had picked up considerably. We were using abt 700g of sinker to hold our bait near bottom when fishes were biting.

Strike rate stops upon sunrise. We ended the trip ard 0900 hrs.

Boat owner is a regular angler to HB/Berakit/SCS & his parting comments for the trip - local fishing is not as bad as what most anglers have always commented. With the right season, spot, tide & bait etc, it's far more enjoyable than being tortured by unfavorable sea state at much further fishing grounds & not forgetting logistics hassle/fuel cost involved. Ang cho strike rate at Berakit/SCS is rather poor nowadays & overall Catch Report for a 2D1N trip can be much worse than what we have landed during a short 10 hrs local nite trip. He'll definitely be back for more local action very soon when he returns from his overseas trip on 23 Oct.

Final tally for the trip
Ang cho 10 pcs (biggest 7.5 lbs on boga)
Sweetlip 2 pcs
Small grouper 1 pc

P.S. - Surprisingly, there isn't any roti prata for this trip

Yo YS,

Between you and KK, it looks like there will be a revival for local water boat fishing in Spore. Points to note are the shifting of spots to accomodate currents and close attention to the tides, wouldn't expect any less from YS...

Great Stuff and Great Catch dude.

Regards,

Saimee
