| Moderator | Re: Relaxing day out on the water.......NOT!! Gave some of my gear a work out, especially the Stella 8000 and Avet SX. Stella worked well but too trigger happy with the drag and managed to popped 50lb with tight drags. Avet hotted to 9kg at sunset, matched to PE4 JigWrex was a comfortable combo to fish with but not enough line capacity for 50lb..... Finished by lunch time with about 40 fish and possibly a couple of 100lb'ders..... |

Hi Honsu, Wow, the sambos are back. BTW is the Avet able to handle the sambo well, because the last I know is that a Kaikon was smashed by the hefty sambo. Cheers

BTW, you had 9kg drag from an Avet SX? what did you do to it man..you drop a NOS into the drag system? hehe.. i remembered my MXJ's ball bearing was sent packing when i sunsetted the reel while fighting a Amberjack and it probably had only abt 16lbs worth of drag..

| Moderator | Re: Relaxing day out on the water.......NOT!! small diameter and narrow spool so less torque on the shaft. Bearings are all stock, main thing is the grease and lube it well. Ive re-arranged some of my shims to achieve a higher ending drag curve.....strike is still only about 6kg. And with 200-300gm of jig......super free spool is not my concern. Helps with a longer rod as well....strike wont be as harsh. The avet is on JigWrex PE4 5'10". Also depends on how the fish strikes as well.......sambos once hooked you can keep their head up until they decided to turn. I am replacing the Avet with a larger reel for more line capacity. Dropping 50lb braid down to 100m depths is a bit scary when U have about 70-80 of line left.... |

All the fish look awesomely large, sighhhhhh and over here we have the latest sequel of "Perfect Storm" just approaching the Philippines... I am suitably impressed that the SX handled the fish and could handle the tweaking of the drags you subjected it to.... I assume that when you rearranged the washers, you also had to crank down on the preset to get the 9kg of max drag?.... and that resulted in some loss of freespool but like you said, since its jigging with heavier jigs, that is not so much of an issue. How did the PE4 Jigwrex handle the 9kg drags?.... I was thinking of getting a lighter overhead outfit but was looking at a PE5 Wrex for 50lb braid. Regards, Saimee

| Moderator | the PE5 jigwrex is relatively long at 6ft.......I reckon either PE4 or PE6 as they are shorter rods and more comfortable to use...imo Yeh the cam is cranked up almost to the max, only 2 clicks left.......you can get more but that damages the shims and its hard to put the sideplate back on. Like I said I'll be relegating this reel to 20-30lb class and will be getting possibly a torsa 16N or Saltist 30TH if money is tight..... =( |
