Ken dude,

Sorry mate, I've never worked on a TBM yet, but looking at the schematics, its a pretty advanced reel considering its age and is a complex bit of kit.

When you say "found that after assembly the winder rotates when in free spool" do you mean that when you engage the lever to freespool, the reel still rotates the spool when you crank on the handle?.

I would suggest you stick this on the WA board as well and ask Alan Tani for help at Tackle Talk

or maybe Hawk on Allcoast at Saltwater Fishing Discussion Board Including Inshore Fishing, Offshore Fishing, Saltwater Fly Fishing and Kayak Fishing

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Regards,

Saimee

Thanks for your reply
What I am trying to say is that when the drag is set and the fish starts to take line the winder also starts to spin with the drum/spool.

Sounds like there is something wrong with your AR dog system, check all the parts to see if its okie...ie the spring, the AR plate and the AR dogs.....

I would agree with JigW that it sounds like an antireverse issue if the handle turns with the spool when line is being pulled out.

But with this reel, there are a whole bunch of parts....

I am uploading the schematic with this post and I would have a closer look at parts 45-55 as they are the relevant dogs, plates and springs/tabs.

Good luck mate,

Regards,

Saimee.

Have you figured out your reel's problem?

I've just serviced my TBM 30/50 and I think the parts are pretty much the same, so I'll hazard a guess.

The spool shaft has a longer end and a shorter end where the cross pins are connected. The longer end must be at the handle side. If it is fitted to the left sideplate (where the AR Dogs are), it is too long and interferes with the AR mechanism.

I'm pleasantly surprised that my reel is corrosion free after many years of minimal service - after use, I merely remove line, spray down with fresh water then spray and wipe off a coat of WD-40. I got this reel so long ago that I've forgotten when. However, this is the second time I've dismantled it to maintain.

The first time was in 1996, when the Clutch Pad Plate melted, and I replaced that with a leather pad. That shook my confidence in the reel a bit, and I relegated it to be my Kite reel.

This round of dismantling, I once again get to admire how every part is metal, and how every part is purpose designed for the reel. I probably spent more time admiring the engineering than fixing the reel. haha
