Shimano drive gear problem

Hi guys,

I have Stella 6000F and used it extensively for both of popping and jigging. Now the handle seems to wear off...

I noticed the problem seems to come from the drive gear. The drive gear tends to wear off / loosen.
It can be seen in the pics attachment part no: 6191. I tried to open all the 6 small screws in the drive gear but still I can't dismantle it.

Anyone here has any idea how to fix it ? Or to rebuild it ?

Many thanks in advance....

best rgds,
Lod.

Hiya Lod,

I need to check first.... when you say that the handle "seems to wear off" do you mean that the handle feels loose and wobbly?. Same question for the main gear - can you actually see if it is not contacting the pinion gear properly/tightly?. Have the threads in the screw-in section of the handle worn out too?.

How long have you had the reel?. Is it in warranty still?.

In any case, if indeed the main gear is the problem, replacement is the only solution, BUT before you do that, check that the pinion gear is ok. You may also want to check the washer and bearings that support the main gear, since if these parts get worn or out of spec, even a new main gear will get damaged pretty fast without the proper support and alignment from the bearings and washers.

I can't tell for sure, but the gear could be a press fit gear. The screws could be additional safety features, but in any case, you should try contacting Shimano to see if they sell the replacement part completely assembled with the screws. Try Shimano Australia or US as they are usually pretty fast to reply by email, in fact there is a dedicated Shimano rep on the Allcoast board that goes by the nik of Bantam1... He's a good dude and replies pretty fast usually.

Good luck dude, sorry I can't be more definite than that.

Regards,

Saimee

Re: Shimano drive gear problem

Hi,

yes, the problem is the handle feels loose and wobbly. If I turned the handle for retrieving the line, there's like an empty gap before the gear actually work/engage.
The threads in the screw-in section of the handle is okay and no sign of worn out.

I have this reels for approx. 2 years and perhaps the warranty is already void by now.
But if I had the time, I'll bring it to TTC to have it checked.

Thanks a lot Saimee.

Re: Shimano drive gear problem

you might want to check both #6190 bearings for wear or play. unlikely, but please do check anyway. regarding the gears, i always replace both main and pinion together, never one or the other. if there is damage to one, there will always be damage to the other. and if you replace only one damaged gear, the other damaged gear left inside will mess up the new one that you just installed. been down that road too many times.

Re: Shimano drive gear problem

I have this same problem with my 5000... my initial thoughts are, how come the smaller versions of the stella seems to have this problem... are we pushing these small reels too much ?

A question for Alantani, how much does it cost to get the replacement of the gear system? Do we just order the main gear and the pinion gears? Is there a correct collective term to use when ordering? (eg Main gear system, main gear assembly etc etc) The 'free-play' between the crank and when the gear plays 'catch-up' is very frustrating.

Re: Shimano drive gear problem

whoops... my bad... did not notice your location!

Yup.. just got back from the authorised dealer and he went to great lengths to explain to me about the other moving and connected parts to the main gear. Apparently, its not just the main gear and the pinion gear, there are 2 other smaller gears at the bottom.

I also realised that if I purchase the right gears, I can essentially change my HG reel to a PG reel... just need to change the pinion and main gear.

Thank you so much Alan. I already ordered the Drive Gear. And after reading your post, I will add my order for the Pinion Gear as well...

Re: Shimano drive gear problem

Yo Lance, of course not... got it from TTC. All I got from Harbin is freezing to death !

And yeah, actually you know the reel. Last time you caught a nice Spanish Mackerel with it....

This one gives an idea for me to do something with my old stl10k...

If I bought drive & pinion gear of Stella 20k, could I use it for Stella 10k ? If it could, I wud really happy to spend 4500 Japanese Yen, JY3000 for drive gear and JY1500 for pinion gear ! And voila, now I can do jigging with stella 10k....

Can anyone confirm this, please.... ?

cheers,
