I haven't done anything special here, just probably did the right maintenence to an awesome reel. Rep Power: 5 ![]() | Re: Progear Oceanus 1:05 minute free spool video Imho ... freespool has to be taken in the right perspective. Depending on what kind of fishing you do, freespool can be a double-edged sword. The crucial thing about freespool, when it comes to lever-drag reels, is for the reel to maintain freespool at the desired strike drag setting. Some manufacturers & aftermarket experts crow about having high drag setting with superb freespool eg. Avet claims 100lb strike drag with freespool for their T-Rex range of reels. Such claims are targeted primarily at the US long range tuna anglers who often freeline small livebait. To them, super smooth freespool is crucial so as not to impede the baits from swimming away from the boat. To a certain extent, good freespool also allows for anglers to lob baits more easily, with a very educated thumb of course. For all intents & purposes, having a super freespool can actually be a bane for the style of fishing we do in Asia. When we drop a jig or a weighted ranggong to the bottom, we HAVE to thumb or feather the spool so we don’t get a bird’s nest or have the leader at the business end of the ranggong entangle the mainline, ranggong notwithstanding, especially with a weak current flow. Same for trolling when deploying a lure to the back of the boat. In these fishing situations, the slightest slip of the thumb on a super smooth freespool reel can result in a disaster. So what good will it do even if a reel can spin for minutes on end when you HAVE to "impede" the freespool to begin with to prevent backlashes? So ............. for those old enough to know what I mean, having a reel that can freespool for umpteenth minutes is akin to having a Dupont lighter that “klinks” the loudest. ![]() Opinions differ of course. |

My Mood: Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Re: Progear Oceanus 1:05 minute free spool video Here in Israel we rarely have large schools of fish that we can jig for all day long. The fishing process includes scanning a vast number of wracks and reefs during the day and getting one or two fishes at some of the places. The interesting thing is that most of the time the first jig getting into the strike zone will get bit. That's what I'm talking about... and I'm constantly getting there first Moni P.S. it takes some time to get that thumb doing the jib but after spending some hours with it it becomes a second nature. I'm even beating the power assisted electric reels and there actually the motor is helping freespool on the drop |

Many wouldn't disagree with me whan I say that very few places are more pathetic than Singapore when it comes to catching any fish consistently, let alone trophy fish ... and I am talking about soaking baits ![]() Forget about jigging, unless you are referring to baitfish. Imho .... your ability to consistently drop a jig first to the bottom has more to do with you taking the time to master the craft rather than having a reel that can freespool longer than another reel. ![]() ![]() ![]() These days, most quality reels out-of-the-box have pretty decent freespool. Having said that, after putting some extra effort to enhance the freespool performance of a reel, perhaps having such a reel gives you the added confidence of being able to drop the jig to the bottom really quick. Maybe I'm missing something but what skill are you talking about ? We are all releaseing almost at the same time and using the same jigs (exactly) most of the time. Is there something else involved in getting your jig there first (from skill perspective I mean) ? Thanks, Moni

It is a matter of knowing your reel well & to make the most of it, which I think you have achieved. Just in case you think that I was being sarcastic, rest assured I wasn't Best regards, Makaira |

Ok I get it. I even didn't imagine you being sarcastic. I just wanted to be sure I'm not missing something obvious. I'm alsways open to other's opinions and willing to learn. Fishing is an area in which many things seem obvious to people, because of the fact that they are very simple and actually trivial somethimes.Let me tell you NOTHING is trivial if you don't know it. Most of the genius tips are "stuped" simple and these are exactely what I'm after. So no hard feelings... AT ALL! Thanks, Moni
