PENN SS8500 how to upgrade?

hi people,

just acquired one of these retro goldie.
1 qn. how to upgrade sia?
2 qn. the gear ratio abit low at 4.6:1. can upgrade?
mine's the old version with stock drag. The drag feels feeble although this reel's seldom used.

btw, looooking for 9500 too!

Hi neub,
As for the drags you can use carbontex drags,you can get it from Sabre but you need to shape it a bit or you can get the Penn HT 100 drags from Siow Chiang, Arab st.

here is the parts list and schematic for the 8500 ss.

PENN 8500SS Parts List

two of the drag washers inside the spool are penn HT-100 #6-60 carbon fiber drag washers. those are fine. the lowest one is a teflon washer #56T-704. toss the teflon washer and replace it with another #6-60. add cal's grease to all three carbon fiber drag washers. there is also thrust washer UNDER the spool. the key # is 60 and the part # is 60-750. now understand, i am doing this from memory, but you should be able to replace this thrust washer with a penn HT-100 carbon fiber drag washer part #6-113. add cal's grease to this washer as well. this should give you a drag system that will stay strong and smooth forever. alan

great, now i can upgrade my good old penn...my first shore and also jigging reel....was going to sell it, but now i change my mind, the reel gave me sentimental value.....
